Fulham are right in the hunt for a Premier League return, with Slavisa Jokanovic’s side in sensational form since the turn of the year.

The Cottagers are fighting for the second automatic promotion spot in the Sky Bet Championship, after an incredible run of form.

Of course, securing automatic promotion will be all that’s on Jokanovic’s mind right now, but he will be relaxed enough in knowing that his Fulham side have the play-offs to fall back on if their quest for the top-two fails.

The squad at Craven Cottage is exceptional, with Fulham having a midfield unit to envy.

Arguably, Tom Cairney, Stefan Johansen and Kevin McDonald are the most complete trio in the division, offering size, craft and defensive ability.

However, going into a potential Premier League campaign next year, Jokanovic will want to improve his options, you’d imagine.

With that in mind, we at FLW take a look at FOUR players we believe would be an upgrade on McDonald…

Drinkwater’s spell with Chelsea has been a difficult one, with the midfielder far from a regular at Stamford Bridge.

Jokanovic could offer the former Premier League champion a route out of Chelsea and a key role at the Cottage.

In terms of age, McDonald is better for Fulham than Barry.

However, what the ex-England international would bring is experience, which would be useful to Fulham should they return to the Premier League.

Saiss has been instrumental for Wolves this season, helping them dominate the Championship.

However, if Wolves undergo big changes in personnel again in the summer, the midfielder could well be on the move.

He’d be an upgrade on McDonald.

Shelvey is slightly different to McDonald, but in terms of ability, he would be a better option in a midfield three.

The Newcastle United man perhaps lacks McDonald’s defensive awareness, but they way Jokanovic likes to play, Shelvey would be perfect.
