Middlesbrough are looking like serious contenders for promotion this season, with Tony Pulis having clearly stamped his influence on the side.

Boro are brilliantly defensively this season, with the experienced boss ensuring his side are extremely tough to create chances against.

They've conceded just three goals in nine games and that defensive solidity is going to be crucial in maintaining a promotion push.

Given that, goals have been harder to come by, but the Teesside outfit do have quality in the final third, although they're certainly missing the pace and power of Adama Traore who gave them something different going forward.

Nevertheless, even if it's not pretty, few would back against Boro returning to the top-flight this season.

But, how would the current crop cope in the Premier League?

We take a look at FOUR players who could be shown the door if Boro are promoted...

It may seem harsh as Shotton has been outstanding this season and is a key figure in that incredible defensive record that Boro have.

However, the 29-year-old hasn't played much in the top-flight throughout his career, with Pulis rarely using the player whilst at Stoke in the Premier League.

With doubts over his ability on the ball and how he would cope against quicker, more intelligent forwards and wide men, Shotton may need upgrading if Boro go up.

There are few who would argue with this choice as the experienced midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at the Riverside this season.

A good player in his day, Leadbitter's best years are behind him and he would be a certainty to move on if Boro are promoted.

Whilst the local lad is a regular under Pulis, he wouldn't be capable of making an impact at the highest level now.

Another who has enjoyed a fine career, the 34-year-old would need to be replaced by a more dynamic and exciting option in the final third.

It's probably fair to say that the biggest jump from Championship to Premier League is for strikers.

We've seen many of the best second-tier number nine's struggle to handle the step up over the years and Assombalonga could join that list.

He is a good option now but there has to be doubts as to whether he'd have the overall game to cope against higher quality opposition.
