It promises to be an intriguing summer to say the least at Villa Park.

Following relegation from the Premier League, the club has made some positive steps forward off the field at least, with Roberto Di Matteo coming in to take the managerial reigns, and a new prospective owner in Tony Xia set to complete a takeover.

The squad which was relegated, on paper, looks more than capable of competing in the Championship, but Di Matteo will be keen to put his own marker on the team and as part of laying that marker down, he might well have to move some players on.

Last season saw something we haven't seen often in the Premier League, and that was a team essentially chucking the towel in midway through the season. Villa went down with a whimper, and you simply have to question if some of the players were big reasons for such negative feeling at the club.

With this in mind, FLW writer Lee Connor looks at FOUR  players Roberto Di Matteo needs to move on....

Aly Cissokho

I'm not sure on everyone's opinion on the left back, but to me, he is simply not good enough.

A string of poor performances last season contributed massively to Villa's downfall, as Cissokho failed to show any of the form he had shown during his time with Valencia in Spain.

Di Matteo will surely be on the lookout for a new left back, or even hoping Jordan Amavi makes a return from injury and can replace Cissokho.

Cissokho for me should be moved on. I question whether he is even good enough for the Championship. At 28, he should be coming into the prime of his career, but for one reason or another, he appears to have just gone backwards.

Adama Traore

Adama Traore

Another bizarre signing last year was Traore, who arrived from Barcelona after barely even playing a game for the Catalan giants, with the Villains shelling out £7m to secure his services.

He made less than 10 appearances last season following a spate of injuries and disciplinary problems, and did nothing to suggest to Villa fans that he will be worth the £7m fee paid for him.

It might be that Di Matteo will look to embrace Traore and try and unearth some of the talent which someone has clearly seen during his time at Barcelona, but in my opinion, I think the Italian manager will be better off just cutting his losses and getting rid of Traore.

Jordan Veretout

Having watched a fair bit of Villa last season as they succumbed to relegation, I can honestly say I saw nothing from Veretout to give me any indication that he looks a decent footballer.

Little in terms of goal threat, not any battling qualities, and without a nailed down position, he is another that you have to put serious question marks over as to why he was actually signed.

Di Matteo will need better midfielders in the Championship, ones who are willing to work for the cause and do the nasty stuff as well as the flair play, and for me, Veretout should be sold on without question.

Jack Grealish

A controversial pick for more than one reason, Grealish divides opinion not just at Villa Park, but in general across football.

There is no doubting that he has the ability to go a long way in the game. However, the problem at the moment is harnessing that ability and actually getting him to perform on the field without the unwanted off pitch distractions.

Di Matteo might not want to risk any more off field distractions and could well look to move Grealish on before anything else negative comes towards the club.

It really is a case of now or never for the young midfielder and his Villa career, and it could well be that he is a gonner in the summer overhaul, with Premier League clubs sniffing and willing to take a chance on him.

Villa fans, who else would you like to see sold? Do you agree with these four? Let us know in the comments!!!!
