After Coventry City's disastrous start to the season, it is clear that more work needs to be done in the transfer window before it shuts on the 31st August.

After failing to score in their opening three games, the Sky Blues slumped to a 3-1 loss against Bradford to leave them with just two points from four matches.

Tony Mowbray has chopped and changed his side over this window but the truth is that Coventry are in a much weaker position than they were last year.

All of the stars of last season have gone: James Maddison, Jacob Murphy, Jack Stephens and Adam Armstrong all returned to their parent clubs; Reda Johnson and Aaron Martin were released; John Fleck and Romain Vincelot jumped ship.

Coventry could do with new arrivals in defence, midfield and attack because the squad is thin. Mowbray knows that he will need several more inbound transfers to compete for a promotion spot next season.

Here are FOUR potential transfers that Coventry could consider...

Oguchi Onyewu

Onyewu

Tony Mowbray is desperate to land a bully-type towering "man mountain" of a centre half and Oguchi Onyewu fits the bill perfectly.

The 6'4'' physical centre back has plenty of experience under his belt having played in France, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and England with Newcastle, QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Charlton.

The free agent has had a trial at Rangers this summer but would be an ideal addition at the back for Coventry, who are lacking a leader in their defensive ranks.

The 34-year-old has also made 69 appearances for the United States so his knowledge of the game would help young centre back trio Jordan Willis, Jordan Turnbull and Cian Harries.

Jay Simpson

Jay Simpson was prolific for Leyton Orient last season but has been left out by Andy Hessenthaler.

The 27-year-old scored 25 goals last year for the O's and caused defences all sorts of problems with his pace.

The former Arsenal youngster would definitely be a good signing for Coventry and he's too good for League One, so it might be a move which suits all parties.

Adam Armstrong

Rafa Benitez has made youngster Adam Armstrong available for loan again this season, and is reluctant to send him to another Championship club.

Therefore Coventry must make it their priority to land the 19-year-old on another loan deal.

The England under-19 international was prolific for the Sky Blues last season, netting 20 goals in 40 league games and impressing with energetic displays up front.

Armstrong is well liked by the fans and familiar with Mowbray and his style of play so a move seems perfect for all parties.

Bobby Zamora

An alternative striker option is Bobby Zamora - who most recently played for Brighton.

The 35-year-old would offer a target up front that the other strikers could operate off, and he still knows where the goal is.

The twice-capped England forward is available on a free so if a compromise can be reached regarding his wages, then a move would be mutually beneficial.
