It has been a mixed start to the new season for Paul Heckingbottom and his Barnsley side with one win and one defeat in the Championship, and a disappointing shock defeat to League One club Northampton in the 1st Round of the EFL Cup.

The Tykes are experiencing the highs and lows of Championship football after their promotion from League One last season, and their inconsistent performances have led to fans calling for more additions to the squad.

Premier League and Football League clubs are starting to finalise their transfer activity over the next two weeks before the summer transfer window closes, to complete their squads for the upcoming season and that could mean a few players facing the exit door at some of the big boys in the top flight and at a number of other league clubs.

Football League World writer Steve Day chooses FOUR players that would be ideal signings for Barnsley to snap up on loan before the transfer deadline arrives....

Shaun Maloney

Scottish international attacking midfielder Maloney would be a superb start for Heckingbottom to start his loan business this season.

The experienced 33-year- old showed last season that he can still deliver the goods at Championship level, as he contributed towards Hull City's promotion campaign back into the Premier League.

Unfortunately, Maloney only made 20 appearances in the league for the Tigers at Championship level and the new head coach that is set to take over at the KCOM Stadium, will surely look to bolster the squad in the midfield area to strengthen them for what is set to be a tough Premier League season.

Maloney remains a regular for the Scottish national team having scored 7 goals in 47 caps.

He has also proved he knows where the net is at club level having scored 62 goals in 301 league appearances, with the majority of those coming in the top flight of the Scottish and English leagues.

Ashley Barnes

One area that Barnsley could do with bulking up is the attacking positions.

The signing of Tom Bradshaw has been seen as a positive bit of business by Heckingbottom, but the desire for more depth in that position has been widely accepted.

Barnes is a player with decent Championship experience having also proven his worth in the Premier League during Burnley's 2014/15 campaign in the top flight.

Despite appearing in 35 of their 38 league games that season he was only used 8 times by Sean Dyche last season, due to suffering knee cruciate ligament damage.

A loan move to the Championship may well be an attractive option for the 26-year-old who might find first team football in the top flight hard to come by for the time being, with Sam Vokes and Andre Gray selected as the Clarets' main strike partnership with the likes of Rouwen Hennings and Lukas Jutkiewicz also competing for a starting spot.

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos

One criticism that has already been expressed by a number of Barnsley fans, over the first few games is a need for a new goalkeeper.

It is a comment that has suffered as much negativity, as it has support but there is no denying the option of another stopper would not be the worst idea for Heckingbottom to consider.

Current number one Adam Davies is not seen by many as the man to hold onto the gloves during Barnsley's Championship campaign, and the signing of the experienced Konstantopoulos, who played a key role in Middlesbrough's promotion to the Premier League, could be seen as essential.

The 37-year-old has only improved with age and with over 333 league appearances to his name ,the Tykes will be loaning a player who has been there and done it.

His opportunities at Middlesbrough now appear limited with the arrival of Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes on Teeside so a move to the Championship would certainly have appeal.

Lynden Gooch

The 20-year-old American midfielder is one of the hottest prospects in the Sunderland youth academy, and was even named as a starter by David Moyes in their opening day 2-1 defeat away to Manchester City.

However, Gooch was subbed off just after the hour mark making a solid yet unremarkable impression on the game and with a number of his midfield rivals set to return from injury over the coming weeks, it looks like Gooch will be sent out on loan to gain some vital first team experience.

A move to Barnsley would boost the club's midfield options and having Gooch would be a huge bonus with the player not only out to impress his parent club, but keen to make his own mark on the league as he begins his fledgeling career as a professional footballer.
