Cheltenham Town have made a fantastic start to the 2019/20 Sky Bet League Two season under the stewardship of former player and club legend Michael Duff.

After finishing 16th in last season's standings, the former Northern Irish international has seen his team pick up 20 points from their opening 10 games as they currently occupy a place in the top three of the division.

Following a mixed start, Cheltenham have now won four in a row and are particularly strong at home - The Johnny-Rocks Stadium - where they remain unbeaten so far, proving formidable on their own patch.

Duff made some useful signing in the summer, bringing in the likes of Tahvon Campbell, Gavin Reilly, Reuben Reid and Max Sheaf. Though some have settled quicker than others, Cheltenham have the nucleus of a decent, competitive League Two side.

They've been better than decent though thus far, and I've highlighted four players who have stood out for them as 'The Robins' have exceeded expectations a little at this early stage.

1. Scott Flinders

The experienced goalkeeper is well versed in the demands and rigours of fourth-tier football, having spent a large part of his career playing at this level for Hartlepool United, York City and Macclesfield Town prior to his arrival at Cheltenham two years ago.

A big presence and a good shotstopper, the 33-year-old is a very competent performer at this level and is a major reason behind his side's early-season success having conceded just eight league goals in the nine matches he's played.

2. Ben Tozer

Like Flinders, defender and captain Ben Tozer is very experienced at League Two level, comfortable with the requirements of a centre back in the fourth tier.

Playing at the heart of a defensive back three at Cheltenham, Tozer is a calming influence, leading a defence that has proved resolute so far this campaign

An ever-present in the side this season, Tozer can also play as a defensive midfielder, while possessing a long throw which his team use to their advantage in attacking situations.

3. Ryan Broom

Midfielder Ryan Broom offers his Cheltenham side an effervescent quality lacking in other players.

While Duff has built an organised, functional side throughout, Broom offers them that pace, trickery and tenacity which compliments his teammates and offers a different threat.

Able to play out wide, either as a wing-back or out and out winger, or centrally as part of a midfield three - Broom has been a key influence for Duff's men, providing forward impetus and scoring four goals in the process.

4. Luke Varney

Evergreen striker Luke Varney is a huge factor in the club's current success and the way in which Duff sets his side up.

Usually working in a front two, the veteran has lost none of his sharpness and willing, as he causes defenders problems both aerially and on the ground.

A wily frontman, always willing to press and hurry the opposition, Varney is more often than not in the right place at the right time to provide the finishing touches to Cheltenham's approach play.
