Sheffield Wednesday can be optimistic about what the new season could bring after a strong end to the current campaign.

Whilst it was a disappointing season on the whole, with the Owls initially targeting another play-off finish, the reality is they weren't helped with a ridiculous injury crisis that hit the club.

Wednesday had to cope without virtually all of their key men for large parts of the season and ultimately they didn't have enough quality to compete in the top-half.

Yet, towards the end of the season, when several key men returned, the Owls looked a good side under Jos Luhukay and the challenge will be replicating that form in August.

However, there are still issues to sort before they become promotion contenders and here we look at four pressing ones...

Whilst the injury crisis is a valid excuse for Wednesday this season, there's no doubt that some players aren't performing to the levels they should be, particularly more experienced players.

The likes of Dave Jones and especially Jordan Rhodes, haven't delivered and Luhukay will surely look to move them on in the coming weeks.

Another positive this season has been the emergence of young talent, with several players getting a chance from the academy.

Unfortunately, arguably the most promising player, Sean Clare, looks set to leave as his contract is up, whilst George Hirst, another talent, could go as well.

If the Owls can't secure deals for these players, which looks unlikely, they need to take action to ensure the next batch of quality youngsters coming through can't walk away.

Luhukay is in a strong position when it comes to goalkeepers, with Kieren Westwood backed up by two promising stoppers in Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson.

With the Irish international injured for much of the campaign, the two youngsters got a chance to impress and took it.

Now though, it's a slight problem. All three will want to play in August and it will be impossible to keep them all happy, so someone is more than likely going to have to leave.

It's vital Wednesday bring in the right players this summer to help the squad and they need a clear plan.

They've been linked with Jack Marriott from Peterborough and Luhukay went in the foreign market in January.

Finding the right players is key and striking deals early will allow them to settle quicker.
