Nottingham Forest endured a miserable campaign but fans will be optimistic about what the future holds with Aitor Karanka.

The Spaniard has had a slow start as Forest boss, failing to make a positive impact since taking over in January.

However, he has now had enough time to assess the squad and is prepared to make big changes in order to get the Reds challenging for promotion next year.

With his experience at Middlesbrough, fans will believe in Karanka as he clearly knows what it takes to be successful in the second tier.

Here we look at four issues he needs to sort out quickly though...

There will be a lot of players arriving at the City Ground in the next few months but one of the most important signings will be a new keeper.

He brought in Costel Pantilimon in January and the Romanian did well, and whether it's making that deal a permanent one or looking elsewhere, they need a new keeper and preferably as soon as possible.

Forest's need for a striker is clear.

The Reds really struggled in front of goal under Karanka, it was extremely poor at times.

Whilst a new number nine won't end all the issues, as the service clearly wasn't up to scratch, it will make a big difference and a proven goalscorer has to be acquired.

Karanka made a lot of signings in January, with many joining the club on loan.

The likes of Jack Colback, Lee Tomlin and Pantilimon arrived on a temporary basis, whilst Kieran Dowell was already there.

He needs to decide who he wants to keep and make decisions on their future.

Previous manager Mark Warburton brought a lot of younger players to the club and whilst Karanka hasn't used many of them, they could still have a future.

The likes of Barrie McKay and Jason Cummings clearly have talent but haven't shown it regularly enough.

Does Karanka just ship them off, or are they worth persevering with? It's highly likely they'll move on but they could flourish in years to come.
