Bolton will be hoping to avoid more final day drama next season.

A 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest meant Barnsley were relegated instead of the Trotters, but they can't afford to keep repeating this drama because they will eventually be on the losing end of it.

Staying in the Championship means they should use the resources available to address multiple areas of the squad that had to be left over the past year due to the financial constraints.

Bolton will always struggle compared to the financial might of some of the other Championship clubs, but sorting out these four issues would help them significantly ahead of next season....

Parkinson was linked with the vacant Sunderland job, but the board made it clear that they should look elsewhere. This was the right approach to have because he was crucial to their survival last season, and they must do the utmost to keep him at the club.

He managed to keep a team up which was largely made up of League One players, veterans past their peak and loanees with little investment available in the transfer windows. Few managers could replicate even if they have more money to spend this season, so they would be significantly at risk of relegation without him.

Loanees were used to bolster the squad last season such as Zach Clough, Antonee Robinson and Reece Burke. Their place in the team needs to be replaced through other loanees or transfers. They are unlikely to be able to bring any of them in permanently.

These players added depth to a squad which was thin with some such as Robinson and Burke being heavily involved. It isn't an ideal arrangement to be so heavily reliant, but there is little they can do within the financial constraints and Parkinson showed that he can bring them in and get the best out of them.

Acquiring a top striker in regards to the resources the Trotters have avilable should be a top priority. Adam Le Fondre, Aaron Wilbraham and Sammy Ameobi were the main options last season. Together they scored 13 goals with Le Fondre scoring over half of them. This is part of the reason why they only scored 39 league goals, which was the second lowest tally in the league.

It's a key area which has to be addressed and it's what they should focus on because they could always sell that player on for a decent price, and potentially profit, if they did get relegated. However, the main issue is attracting a player to their project with League One being their best place to look.

This squad is mainly made up of League One players, so it generally needs improving to reduce the gap between them and other Championship sides as well as making Parkinson's job easier by making it easier to stay up while also allowing him to bring in some players he wants.

They will be limited in how much they can achieve in this regard, but Parkinson has shown an eye for a bargain, so he could certainly improve a few areas. The more that they are able to change, the more they are able to use a platform to build from and potentially making their position a lot more sustainable which would bring in some much needed revenue.
