Nobody can say Ipswich aren't consistent, they have been in the Championship longer than any other team and last season was another average one for Mick McCarthy's boys.

After reaching the play-offs last year and losing to Ipswich, they were expected to challenge again mostly keeping the squad together except losing Tyrone Mings to Bournemouth, but they added some talent in the shape of Jonathan Douglas and Brett Pitman, as well as the shrewd loan move for Ainsley Maitland Niles.

Daryl Murphy was the Championship's top scorer when Ipswich reached the play-offs with 27 goals two seasons ago, but was not anywhere near as prolific last season with just 10 goals.

Goals was the major problem for Ipswich with just 53 goals, 13 less than Sheffield Wednesday who finished one place above them in the play-offs whilst Ipswich settled for 7th.

Pitman ended up the top goalscorer and McCarthy will need to add some depth in the summer with most midfield intent coming from the impressive Ryan Fraser and Jonathan Douglas, whilst Ainsley Maitland Niles had an impressive loan spell.

If Ipswich are to finally get promoted in a tough looking Championship next season they need to do some shrewd business in the loan and transfer market.

Preferably adding some striking options and defensive cover and to free up some funds they need to get rid of some deadwood in the squad.

Here are FOUR players Mick McCarthy needs to get rid of in the summer in order for Ipswich to progress.......

Cameron Stewart

The 25-year-old arrived at Ipswich from Hull in 2014 and has made 1 appearance in 2 years.

He was on loan at Doncaster this season scoring 4 goals in 20 games, and was unable to save them from relegation.

He has never been able to establish himself anywhere, having one good season at Hull but then being loaned out several times with no success until his permanent move to Ipswich.

With him not making an appearance and struggling in League One last season, it is likely that Ipswich will move him along in the summer to make room for a more notorious winger.

Kevin Foley

Brought in as defensive cover, the Irish right back has barely been used at Portman Road and is mainly cover for Luke Chambers.

Foley enjoyed his best years at Wolves being a fixture in their team when they were in the Premier League, but since leaving has struggled to establish himself at another club.

After two miserable spells at Blackpool and Copenhagen, he found himself at Ipswich barely playing football so a move away would suit all parties concerned.

Giles Coke

It was always a risky signing for Ipswich with him failing to impress for Sheffield Wednesday at this level, and was mainly with them in League One.

The 30- year-old midfielder lacks composure on the ball and has failed to establish himself in the Ipswich midfield this season, with Bru and Hyam preferred in the central positions.

He only made 1 start in the league this season and 8 appearances including cup competitions failing to impress, so it's hard to envisage a future for him at the club.

Larsen Toure

The French midfielder was one of the stranger signings McCarthy made at the start of the season from French side Arles, and he has spent most of his career in the lower French leagues.

He was offered a contract at Ipswich after impressing in pre-season, but Toure has had a disappointing season playing just 5 times and not scoring once.

Douglas, Bru and Hyam are all above him int he pecking order and it is time for him to move on.
