Chris Hughton will now be reflecting on what has been a disappointing Championship campaign for Nottingham Forest.

The 62-year-old arrived at the City Ground in October and replaced Sabri Lamouchi looking to cure the Reds' hangover after missing out on the play-offs last season.

He inherited a large group of players which had been bolstered by 13 new signings before he had even arrived on Trentside, and this summer will be vital as he looks to make his mark on the squad.

Five loan players have now returned to their parent clubs in Anthony Knockaert, Cyrus Christie, Luke Freeman, Filip Krovinovic and James Garner, and seven players are also now out of contract with decisions needing to be made on their future.

Here, we take a look at four players who could arrive at the City Ground in the next few weeks, and four who could be on their way out, too...

A lot will hinge on whether Forest can bring James Garner back on loan next season, but there could be scope to bring in a new central midfielder.

Gillingham captain Kyle Dempsey is believed to be on the Reds' radar after a fine individual campaign for the League One side.

Dempsey scored eight goals and registered four assists from midfield this season, and won Gills' Player of the Season award.

According to Football Insider, Forest are lining up a bid for the 25-year-old midfielder, who could be available at a price of around £500,000 to £750m000 this summer.

Yates has been in excellent form for Blackpool this season.

The striker has played an influential role in helping the Tangerines reach the League One play-off semi-finals, after finishing in third.

Yates has scored 20 goals in 44 league appearances this season, netting 22 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old is on the Reds' radar as they prepare for next season, and Blackpool could be resigned to losing him if they do not win promotion this term.

Having been one of the lowest scorers in the division this term and Glenn Murray, Lyle Taylor and Lewis Grabban all over 31, fresh attacking options are needed.

With Yuri Ribeiro out of contract, Gaetan Bong reportedly told to find a new club and uncertainty regarding Nicholas Ioannou's future, a new left-back could also be needed.

Josh Ruffels is on Forest's radar, as per The Athletic, with the Oxford United defender trying to help the U's win promotion from League One via the play-offs this term.

Ruffels has scored six goals and has added six assists this term, and has made over 300 appearances for the club.

He is out of contract in the summer, so it remains to be seen whether they can lure him to the City Ground on a free.

Tottenham Hotspur winger Jack Clarke is also on the Reds' loan radar, as per The Athletic.

Clarke joined Spurs from Leeds United for around £10million in the summer of 2019, after impressing in a breakthrough campaign under Marcelo Bielsa.

He rejoined Leeds on loan in 2019/20, but failed to impress before joining QPR on loan in the second half of the season.

He has registered two assists in 14 games for Stoke City on loan this term, before injury sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign.

He could arrive on loan as Hughton looks to add more speed out wide.

It certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see Arter leave this summer.

In fact, perhaps the biggest difficulty Forest will face is finding a suitor for the midfielder.

Football League World understand that Arter was offered to a foreign club on loan in January, but wage demands meant that a deal could not be completed.

Arter has made 13 league appearances this season, and has struggled with injuries which has led to him being unable to make an impression under Chris Hughton.

He's 31 and isn't part of the manager's plans, and the Telegraph report that he has been told to find a new club.

Bong is another one of those players who has reportedly been told to find a new club, as per the Telegraph.

The left-back is a player who Chris Hughton trusts after winning promotion together at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Bong has made only 10 appearances for the Reds in the Championship this season, but he has behind the likes of Tyler Blackett and Yuri Ribeiro.

He's out of contract at the end of next season and the club may look to recuperate some sort of fee for him this summer, rather than lose him for nothing at the end of next season.

Carl Jenkinson is another one who could be sold this summer.

Jenkinson arrived at Forest last season, joining in the summer after his lengthy stay with Arsenal came to an end.

The 29-year-old has made only three appearances in the Championship this season, though, and Cyrus Christie has played for 44 successive Championship matches.

Jenkinson has reportedly been told to find a new club this summer, and it seems like there is now future for him on Trentside.

We end with Fouad Bachirou.

Bachirou joined the Reds from Malmo FF in the summer, and was regarded as an important signing by Sabri Lamouchi.

But the midfielder, who plays for Comoros, has only made three appearances for the Reds in all competitions this term.

Only one of those appearances have come in the Championship, which came as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Barnsley in January.

Bachirou looks set to leave this summer.
