Wigan Athletic are on the lookout for a new manager after John Sheridan was confirmed as Swindon Town's new boss today.

The 56-year-old only took over the Latics in September on a month-to-month contract and he has overseen what has been a very disappointing start to the season.

With off-field issues dominating much of the summer, it should be said that Sheridan inherited a weak squad but the side are bottom of the league after 11 games.

A proposed takeover is in the pipeline and the first major task for the Spanish consortium when it does go through will be to appoint a new manager.

Here we look at FOUR potential candidates they should consider...

This would be an ambitious move but with Cowley favourite for the Tranmere job, Wigan should feel they have a chance.

If they could pull this off, the Latics would be getting a manager who has consistently delivered results over the years.

His standout success came at Lincoln, where he took the side to Football League and they have progressed into League One, whilst he also kept Huddersfield in the Championship last season.

Cowley, and his brother Nicky, is currently available and could be a great long-term option if he is given suitable support.

Alexander has been a steady manager in the Football League over the years and he is out of work having been sacked by Salford last month.

Many felt that was an extremely harsh decision given the side were well positioned in League Two and unbeaten.

Having done well with Fleetwood and Scunthorpe on the whole prior to that, Alexander could be the safe pair of hand Wigan need at this time.

The former player and manager has delivered success to Wigan on the pitch and in the dugout, memorably winning the third tier with the club in his first full season as manager in 2016.

Even though he wouldn't be working with such a quality group of players, that shows the Scotsman knows what's needed to get results at this level.

Again, he is available to take over immediately and has made it clear he would welcome the chance to return.

Some may feel this is a slightly riskier move but the former England international did very well with Macclesfield and although he struggled at Southend, that was a near impossible job in hindsight.

He will be eager to prove himself in League One and working with someone who had such a successful career could transform some of the current squad.
