4 goals, 6 assists: Sheffield Wednesday need to take a punt on this EFL wing wizard

Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday overcame a Steel City derby defeat and loss to lowly Birmingham City by beating Yorkshire rivals Leeds United at Hillsborough last weekend.

The Owls currently sit in 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship table having accrued 16 points from 11 league games, and will be going into the international break with a more positive mindset.

Carvalhal tends to utilise a 4-4-2 system in most league games, and the partnership of Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher up-front is starting to take shape, but could that attacking duo be complemented better by the wingers?

The Owls don’t have an abundance of depth in the wide areas, and it’s an area that Carvalhal needs to strengthen in the January transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday’s wide players are reaching the latter stages of their careers (minus Adam Reach) and they need to freshen up the position, if they are to challenge in the higher echelons.

One player who is making major strides in Sky Bet League Two this season is Coventry City winger Jodi Jones.

The 19-year-old is the Sky Blues’ most prized asset and his dazzling displays on the right-wing have certainly caught the eye so far this season.

Quick, skilful and direct – Jones has been causing opposition defences serious problems this season, and he is always at the heart of Coventry City’s attacking plays.

Carvalhal should undoubtedly cast an eye over the impressive player, who has notched four goals and six assists from 13 matches so far this season.

Jones looks like he has the credentials to make the step up to the Championship already, and unlikely to cost too much, this is a player who would not stretch the wallet for Dejphon Chansiri.

The 19-year-old could follow in the footsteps of Brentford forward Ollie Watkins who moved from League Two Exeter in the summer, and is now excelling in the second tier of English football.

It’s time Carvalhal took a punt and delved into the lower divisions, and Jones is the ideal acquisition.
