Leeds are one of the biggest clubs in England but have only just recently recovered from financial collapse.

Leeds enjoyed their best years in the extremely successful Don Revie era lasting from 1961 to 1974 where they picked up 2 Division One titles, the FA Cup, the League Cup and 2 Inter Cities Fairs Cups.

They finished runners up in the 1975 European Cup final losing to Bayern Munich in a controversial match where fans felt the referee cheated them.

After years of inconsistency in the league they had more success in the Howard Wilkinson era where they won Division 1 just before it became the Premier League.

Years of success followed in the Premier League where they regularly finished in the top 4 and challenged for the title.

But financial implosion in 2001 saw them relegated a few years later and a series of relegation's followed. Leeds haven't been back to the Premier league since and are now an established Championship side.

Here are 4 facts you didn't know about Leeds United:

1975 European Cup Final

Jimmy Armfield was in charge of Leeds after Don Revie had left to take the England job and Armfield took Revie's aging squad for the biggest game in Leeds's history. It was held in Paris and Bayern Munich won 2-0 thanks to late goals from Franz Roth and Gerd Muller.

But the match proved controversial as Leeds were denied a number of clear penalties after fouls by Bayern captain Franz Beckenbauer. The German legend also convinced the referee who had awarded Leeds a goal after Lorimer scored but after consulting with the linesman it was disallowed for offside.

Riots broke out and Leeds were banned from European competition for a number of years.

Huddersfield affiliation

Leeds City became Leeds United in 1920 after the former was disbanded and they began playing in the Midland League. Yorkshire Amateurs had been playing at Elland Road but vacated, surprisingly Huddersfield chairman Hilton Crowther bought Leeds United too and wanted to bind the 2 clubs.

There was public outcry in Huddersfield and the fans bought him out meaning Crowther could focus on Leeds and they entered the Football League with Cardiff in 1920. The association with Huddersfield meant they adopted Huddersfield's blue and white kit at first.

The Brian Clough failure

When Leeds's most successful manager Don Revie left for England it was surprising that Clough chose to take over given the hatred he had for Revie.

Clough had loads of success at Derby after a great playing career with Middlesbrough but endured 44 days of turmoil at Leeds. Clough antagonized the players telling them to throw medals won under Revie away as they had been won by cheating.

The players turned on him and his tenure was short lived and he went on to have a very successful spell at Nottingham Forest where he won 2 European Cups.

Real Madrid

As mentioned previously the famous All White strip donned by Leeds United wasn't a huge tradition beforehand. The club played in blue and gold until the 60's where Revie chose to change it to an All White kit.

Revie explained this decision by saying he wanted Leeds to be like the Yorkshire Real Madrid feared by everyone and winning everything. Revie proved to be right as Leeds enjoyed the most successful years in their history in the 60's.
