Portsmouth have been dealt a blow by the decision from Millwall to recall Ben Thompson from his loan at Fratton Park.

The 23-year-old had spent a hugely successful spell on the south coast, endearing himself to the Pompey faithful thanks to his combative, energetic displays in the middle of the pitch.

Thompson played 28 times in all competitions for the League One leaders, scoring thrice during his time at the club.

He had been a large part as to why the club sit at the summit of the third tier, and his absence will be felt.

But Pompey’s loss is Thompson’s parent club’s gain with Kenny Jackett now having to go out and source a replacement, with slim hope of the 23-year-old returning to the club before the window closes.

When a player leaves, another will need to arrive, and with that said, here are four possible Thompson replacements Portsmouth must seriously consider.

Lewis Wing

The Middlesbrough midfielder has been in and out of the side this term and has had the majority of his success in cup action, with league starts coming at more of a premium.

With Thompson now departed, Lewis Wing could benefit from regular game time at Fratton Park and be a mainstay in their side as Portsmouth continue their pursuit of promotion back to the Championship.

Jem Karacan

One Millwall player leaves, and another going the other way could be beneficial for the League One side.

Kenny Jackett knows Jem Karacan from signing him for Millwall ten years or so ago on loan from Reading.

His contract with the London club was short term and expires at the end of the month.

Now could be the perfect time to try and swoop for the 29-year-old to fill the void left by Thompson.

Sammie Szmodics

The Colchester United midfielder has been on top form for the Essex side this season, scoring eight times and registering three assists.

John McGreal’s side are currently eighth in League Two – outside the play-offs on goal difference, and that is my no small part thanks to Sammie Szmodics.

The 23-year-old could be a player for now, and the future should Portsmouth wish to show an interest.

Teddy Bishop

The Ipswich Town man has made just three appearances for the club this season the most recent as a second-half substitute in the defeat to Millwall on New Year’s Day.

After a long injury lay-off, Paul Lambert will want to protect the midfielder, but with him adding to his squad, first-team opportunities could become harder to be given.

To get back to full match speed, and the chance to play regularly to do so, Portsmouth could well be the perfect temporary home for the 22-year-old moving to a side one place below them in the football pyramid, and fighting for a place in the Championship.
