The 2016/17 Championship campiagn is a massive one for Blues manager Gary Rowett, as he looks to push his Blues side on to a potential play-off spot, after two dismal mid-table finishes over the past two seasons.

After arriving from high-flying Burton Albion in the October of 2014, Rowett's has done an incredible job, transforming the Blues from relegation battlers in English football’s second tier into contenders for the top six, and being touted as possible contenders for a return to the Premier League this term.

And as a former Blues player, the 42-year-old manager knows what the St. Andrews faithful desire, and will no doubt be looking to acheive the ultimate prize this year. And with arch rivals Aston Villa dropping down to the Championship too this year, bigger things are at stake.

Birmingham have already been busy in the summer transfer window with Rowett signing James Vaughan, Robert Tesche, Ryan Shotton and Che Adams, but with seven players departing the club already there is still room for more additions before the transfer deadline day.

Here, Football League World writer George Harbey identifies FOUR players that Rowett should look to sign, in order to form a major charge for promotion....

Greg Stewart

This player is a name that Blues fans must have become accustomed to in their daily lives this summer.

Rowett has made several bids for the Dundee forward, who has made 71 appearances for the Scottish club at the age of 26.

Claimed "too important to lose" by Dundee manager Paul Hartley, Stewart has been subject to interest by Rowett throughout the summer, and the Blues boss is keen to fulfil the hole left by Demarai Gray last term, and Stewart would be the perfect candidate to do so, on the left wing.

Johnny Russell

If Dundee stay strong and resist the temptation to let Stewart go, then Rowett should look no further than Russell.

The Derby winger, who has had vast experience in coming extremely close to promotion from the Championship, has made 124 appearances for the Rams, and has already been identified as a target by Rowett if Stewart isn't to sign.

The 26-year-old has also been subject to interest from Sheffield Wednesday, however a sleeping giant like Birmingham are more than capable if and when it comes to luring Russell to St. Andrews.

Tomer Hemed

The 29-year-old Israelian hit the ground running for Brighton and Hove Albion last term, netting 17 times in 42 games.

Scoring goals isn't necessarily a problem for Rowett's men, with Clayton Donaldson leading the line, with 26 goals in 86 appearances under his belt for the Blues.

But at the age of 32, Rowett shouldn't keep insisting on relying on Donaldson for the goals, hence why Hemed could be the perfect out and out striker for the Blues.

Nabil Bentaleb

In order to shore up the Blues' defence and build from the back, the 21 year old Algerian holding midfielder would be the perfect man for that role.

After being told that he is surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane, the Spurs man has been told to find a new club, and what better place to ply his trade than at St. Andrews this term.

Making 46 appearances for Tottenham, and 19 caps for Algeria, Bentaleb would be an adequate acquitsion for Rowett.
