Jos Luhukay will be aiming to get Sheffield Wednesday back in play-off contention in his first full season.

The Owls really struggled last season as a severe injury crisis pushed the squad to its limits at times, with academy graduates being used to plug the gaps.

However, Luhukay now has a proper chance to make the squad his own through bringing in new personnel because he has a good understanding of the players.

The academy graduates who were used can also be used as a squad players because they have experience at this level.

Therefore, they should be able to mount a strong promotion push next season. There are a few areas that could be strengthened, though, because last season proved that some players aren't up to the required standard. Here are three players they should bring in...

Villa could be cutting down their squad due to financial issues, so they are likely to listen to offers with £4.5m Taylor's value on TransferMarkt. Taylor would be a good addition for Wednesday because Morgan Fox struggled at times last season and doesn't appear to fit the 3-5-2 system that Luhukay prefers.

The Welsh full-back is used to this formation from his time with Wales and he has plenty of experience at this level as well as in the Premier League. Therefore, he would provide a more defensive alternative to Adam Reach in the left wing-back role, which could be useful against the top Championship teams.

Onomah was on loan at Villa last season, but ended up falling out of the first-team due to Steve Bruce finding his ideal midfield three. He played well, though, because he scored four goals and provided three assists in 1866 league minutes.

The 21-year-old is close to but unlikely to break into Tottenham's first-team this season, so he will probably be sent out on loan again. Therefore, Wednesday need to be at the front of the queue because he is an excellent box-to-box midfielder with a clear understanding of pressing and cutting off passing lanes. He would be a good fit for the central midfield position in the 3-5-2.

Hoilett is yet to sign a new contract with Cardiff even though they achieved promotion to the Premier League and appear willing to keep him. This suggests that the decision is down to him and Wednesday could take advantage of this. Hoilett would provide a significant attacking threat from wide areas with his pace being a key asset for the team to increase their counter-attacking ability.

The Canadian international is unlikely to attract Premier League interest, so the Owls have a good opportunity. They need to offer him a good contract as well as persuade him of the merits of Luhukay's project because they should be challenging for top six at least. It could be difficult, but not impossible because there appears to be some serious issue stopping him from signing a new contract.
