It's one of the biggest derbies in the division, but which players would actually make up a combined eleven of Nottingham Forest and Derby County?

The two clubs certainly have plenty of history to back them up and both employed the legendary Brian Clough as manager at one point, but that can't stop the intense hatred between the clubs.

We only have to wait four game weeks before we see the latest East Midlands chapter unfold, as Derby play host to struggling Forest as they aim to continue the recovery started by Steve McClaren.

Philippe Montanier is a man who's job's on the line and if results continue in the way they have he may not make it to face Derby, particularly as owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi nears the exit door.

With a 4-4-2 formation, FLW Writer Charlie Firth looks at the best possible XI if, by some horrible miracle, the squads were combined...

Goalkeeper: Scott Carson

scott-carsonddddddds

Carson is far from the perfect keeper but he's solid enough and has been a decent servant for Derby during his season and a bit at the club, joining for Wigan over the summer of 2015.

He's a far better option than Vladimir Stojkovic, who's been extremely disappointing since signing a two-year-contract over the summer, with a number of errors including a howler that allowed John Swift to score as Forest played Reading.

It's certainly Stojkovic's lack of ability rather than Carson's quality that puts him in this line up between the stick.

Both will be hoping to improve their form as the season continues, however.

Right back: Cyrus Christie

cyrus-christiecyrus-christieddddd

The ever reliable Cyrus Christie is consistency solid and rarely puts in a poor shift at the back for Derby, and has been a mainstay in their side for over two years since joining from Coventry City in 2014.

The Republic of Ireland international would certainly be picked over Forest's Eric Lichaj, who's been a consistent member of the Forest eleven since 2013, joining from Aston Villa.

Christie faces a minimum of three months on the sidelines after suffering a foot injury, which will be a big blow to Derby as they hope to resurrect their season.

Centre back: Alex Pearce

pearcews

This man had a terrible, terrible first season in a Derby shirt, after moving on a free transfer from Reading and failing to win a start all season.

He was eventually shipped out on loan to Bristol City, where he also struggled.

But the Republic of Ireland has seemingly resurrected his career at the club and has seemingly been one of their best players so far this year.

Many Rams fans now actually consider him to be the club's best centre back, fairly astonishing given his start to life at Pride Park, and he'll hope to kick on and have similar long term success to his time at Reading.

Centre back: Jason Shackell

Jason Shackell Jason Shackell

Unfortunately I'm not a massive fan of Richard Keogh, the Derby captain, so I go with Jason Shackell here, who hasn't been in his strongest vein of form for Derby this season.

It's also extremely hard to pick a Nottingham Forest centre back/defender given their horrendous defensive record so far this year.

They've conceded 30 Championship goals, which is only better than Rotherham - a worrying statistic.

With regards to Shackell, he'll be hoping to win a place back in the side as Steve McClaren becomes re-accustomed with his Derby outfit.

Left back: Craig Forsyth

forsythhh

This will feature some Forest players, I promise.

Unfortunately for the Tricky Trees, Armand Traore and Danny Fox have been exceedingly average this year, doing little to recover their horrendous defensive record.

But Craig Forsyth has been in stellar form this year and could be described as Derby's best player right now.

The left back has an eye for goal and has knocked in some stunners over the year.

The Scotland international is ever reliable and would undoubtedly feature in the vast majority of Championship elevens.

Right wing: Hildeberto Pereira

***CONTROVERSY KLAXON***

Opinion is split on the Portuguese, who is on loan from Benfica with a hefty option to buy, after three (yes, THREE) red cards this season (just eight appearances).

He'd never received one before this year.

Frustration seems to lie with manager Philippe Montanier, who seems to enjoy playing the explosive wide man at right back, which just doesn't seem to be his position.

He is an enormous attacking threat on the wing, if he keeps his discipline together. You could look towards Tom Ince or Ikechi Anya in this position, but I've opted for Pereira.

Central midfield: Henri Lansbury

henri-lansburyhenri-lansburyd

Not in the best form at the moment, but on his day Henri Lansbury is a highly influential player for Nottingham Forest who can often show off his Arsenal pedigree with his stylish play.

It's a testament to the ability of this man that Burnley manager Sean Dyche is such a big fan of his, having infamously tried to sign him for Burnley on numerous occasions.

Forest's struggles could easily be aided by the return to form of Lansbury, and if he can find his feat again (following his suspension after a red card on Saturday) it could be very promising for the club.

Central midfield: Bradley Johnson

bradley-johnsonc

Mind numbingly average despite being a pretty mind blowing signing for Derby last year, but Bradley Johnson has seriously come into his own this year, particularly since the return of Steve McClaren.

He joined from Norwich for £6 million on deadline day of 2015, despite scoring 15 goals from the middle of the park during the Canaries promotion campaign.

He's been pushed back into defensive midfield under McClaren, where he's seriously flourished and will try and continue his form throughout the season.

Left wing: Johnny Russell

johnny-russellcd

Not in amazing form this year but the quality of Johnny Russell is simply undeniable.

He's been converted from a striker to a winger since joining from Dundee United, where he's become one of the league's top players.

He's managed at least six goals a season during his time at Derby and will hope to get back into goalscoring form with his solitary one this year.

He's a super player who would definitely be a mainstay in the vast majority of Championship sides, would they be so lucky to sign him.

Striker: Britt Assombalonga

assombalongaassombalongam

I really like Britt Assombalonga and would give my right arm to have him at my club.

He's quick, he's powerful and has a vicious strike on him.

His form was broken down by an injury to his knee that kept him on the sidelines for a year in 2015, he's now back and ready to fire Forest up the table, with four strikes already this season.

He's actually scored in his only two East Midlands Derby, opening the scoring in his first derby game in 2014 before netting in the reverse fixture in the same season.

Striker: Matej Vydra

matej-vydrad

As a Reading fan it would be fair to say I'm not the biggest fan of Matej Vydra, after possibly one of the most frustrating seasons I've ever seen from a single player, on loan in Berkshire last year.

But his previous escapades in the Championship with Watford give him enormous pedigree and is what gets him into this eleven, having departed Vicarage Road for Derby this summer.

Derby and Forest fans... What do you make of this eleven? Who do you think should be in there? Who shouldn't? Let us know in the comments below!
