Gary Caldwell’s Wigan Athletic side have got off to a shaky start this season and have so far, found it difficult to adapt to life back in the Championship.

Wigan currently lie 22nd in the Championship which represents a poor start to the season.

After last season's success, most Wigan fans expected their side to at least be out of the relegation places.

Wigan are currently three games unbeaten but that run has only seen them pick up one win, at home against Wolves.

Last time out, the Latics played hosts to Burton Albion in a game which Wigan would have identified as one where they could pick up three points. However, they played out a goalless draw on what was a frustrating day for Wigan.

Gary Caldwell left Wigan hotshot Will Grigg on the bench for that game, possibly resting him ahead of a big game on Tuesday against Leeds.

If Wigan play this 4-2-3-1 formation they could pick up a crucial result on the road against Leeds United....

Goalkeeper – Adam Bogdan

Hungarian international, Adam Bogdan is likely to start in goal for The Latics.

The Liverpool loanee has a wealth of experience in The Championship with Bolton Wanderers and his experience could be crucial for Wigan over the season as they bid to avoid relegation.

Right Back – Nathan Byrne

Nathan Bryne is currently on loan from Wolves. Byrne was a standout performer in Swindon’s League One promotion charge two years ago but the move to Wolves never quite worked out for him.

Now on loan at Wigan, the full back has a chance to prove he can perform at this level, before his return to Wolves.

Naturally Byrne is a winger but with Wigan’s injury crisis at right back, Byrne has had to step in and so far is doing a great job

Centre Back – Jake Buxton

After being released by Derby in the summer, Buxton was recruited by Wigan.

A wise head at the back will be something Wigan need throughout the season, whether it’s to help see a game out or make a goal saving tackle, Buxton’s experience will be crucial in the fight to avoid relegation.

Centre Back – Dan Burn

Burn, another summer recruit has come in for some criticism amongst Wigan fans so far this season, but a man of the match performance and a heroic goal line clearance on Saturday, may well have changed some Wigan fans view on him.

The 6’7” centre half is a threat from set pieces and is also great when it comes to defending them too.

Left Back – Stephen Warnock

After a loan spell with Wigan last season, Warnock made the permanent switch to Wigan in the summer and is now the club captain.

The experienced left back has played in the Championship before so he knows what the league is all about, something that will be essential for Wigan, if they are to start climbing the table.

Warnock doesn’t really have a reputation as an attacking full back, but he can get forward and produce quality when needed.

Centre Midfield – Max Power

Wigan signed Max Power last summer on a free transfer from Tranmere, who were relegated to League 2.

Power was a key figure in Wigan’s return to the Championship last year, producing numerous good performances and scoring some key goals.

Power has the capabilities to get forward from midfield and he certainly isn’t shy of shooting from distance, scoring some stunning goals last season.

Centre Midfield – Shaun MacDonald

MacDonald was a summer arrival from Bournemouth and has slotted straight into the Wigan midfield alongside Max Power.

MacDonald has been one of Wigan’s top performers so far this season.

He compliments power well with MacDonald doing lots of the dirty work and then keeping it simple when he has the ball.

After five years at Bournemouth, he decided to move on in the hope of finding regular football.

Right Midfield – David Perkins

Perkins played most of last season in centre midfield but he has lately found himself playing out wide.

Having played the majority of his career in centre midfield, Perkins will have to adapt quickly to his new position.

Perkins was voted Players Player of the year and Player of the year last season as he was a key performer in Wigan’s march to the Championship.

Attacking Midfield – Jordi Gomez

Gomez returned to Wigan at the start of the season, two years after he left.

Gomez has slotted straight into the Wigan team and he will be key to them if they are to do well this season.

Gomez possesses quality from dead ball situations which could create some vital goals for Wigan.

The former Spain U17 international has had spells in the Premier League with Wigan and Sunderland and he will hope to maybe get back there soon.

Left Midfield – Michael Jacobs

Jacobs signed for Wigan at the beginning of last season and was another big player in their promotion charge.

The Latics wide man can play on either side, something essential in Gary Caldwell’s team.

Despite not being blessed with blistering pace, Jacobs can certainly create a chance for his team mates.

Jacob’s work ethic is one thing that can’t be disputed, as long as he is on the pitch, he gives Gary Caldwell 100% effort.

Striker – Will Grigg

When Grigg signed for Wigan last year, few would have predicted the season he had last year.

His 24 goals fired Wigan to promotion and earned him a call up to the Euro 2016 Northern Ireland squad.

Grigg didn’t feature during the Euro’s but that hasn’t dented his confidence.

He has returned to Wigan and already has five goals to his name. Griggs goals will be crucial if Wigan are to avoid relegation this year and he will be hoping to continue his fine form away at Leeds on Tuesday.
