After a slow start, Plymouth Argyle are on the back of five wins in a row, and they will look to make it six when the Football League’s bottom club Cambridge United visit Home Park on Saturday.

Winless so far, Cambridge have already lost to Luton Town, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United, three teams widely expected to be pushing for promotion to League One.

Argyle are expected to be among them and, whilst last weekend they played indifferently, they managed to come away with the points thanks to a Sonny Bradley 92nd minute winner against Cheltenham Town.

The mark of champions some will call it, but their performance will need to improve if they want promotion, and perhaps they have a marker to go by - their 4-1 demolition of Newport County in the EFL Trophy just days before that 1-0 win.

Up to third, only Morecambe (on goal difference) and Luton sit above them, and last year’s play-off finalists will be hoping their great form can keep the pressure on the two sides.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Ryan Evans picks a Plymouth XI that will beat Cambridge United when the two sides face in Devon on Saturday...

GK - Luke McCormick

Luke McCormickmklop

The 33-year-old is on the back of a good season last time around, and has started this one in fine form too, keeping three clean sheets in his last three games.

Under more pressure this term than he has been in many years from number two Vincent Dorel, Derek Adams choosing to give him the captaincy has appeared to boost his confidence.

Even when he has a fairly quiet game, you always feel pretty confident that if the opposition were to break, McCormick would be able to save his team.

It’s a real asset to this Argyle team that they have one of the best goalkeepers in the league, and Adams and the Green Army will be hoping for more clean sheets throughout the rest of the season.

RB - Oscar Threlkeld

Oscar Threlkeldddd

I’ll admit that I was surprised when I first saw Oscar Threlkeld’s name in the right-back slot, although a string of impressive performances there, in conjunction with there being more resources at centre-midfield, leaves me to think that this could be the position where he features most often this season.

His move to that berth has coincided with the team not conceding since.

The 21-year-old shows wise beyond his years with both his tackling and positioning, and when the shackles were unleashed last weekend and he was less afraid of going forward, he looked good and even set up the winner.

If he can keep up the good work, then new signing Gary Miller will struggle to get a sniff at the first team.

CB - Nauris Bulvitis

Nauris Bulvitis

Argyle’s Latvian international has taken this league by the scruff of its neck with some excellent performances, and the winning goals in the games against Notts County and Blackpool.

His experience around Europe is likely to make the 29-year-old Adams’s first choice centre-back.

Since the back four has been settled, Plymouth have reverted to the type from last season with a decent defensive record, and Bulvitis will play a major role in that going forward.

CB - Sonny Bradley

Sonny Bradley

The goalscoring hero from last weekend, Bradley popped up when it mattered, and made sure that his team’s efforts and decent performance in the second half wasn’t for nothing.

He looked assured at the back and a threat from set pieces, and long may that continue.

He’s been ever-present for the Pilgrims this season after signing from Crawley Town on a free in the summer, with the goal of helping his side finally win promotion back to League One.

LB - Ben Purrington

purrington

It’s been three years since young Purrington first broke into the Argyle first team, and in those three years he has seen more of the dugout than the playing surface.

However, this season could be different.

Gary Sawyer’s injury, whilst unfortunate for him, has turned out to be the foothold in the team that Purrington needs.

He came on for the club’s vice-captain at half-time in the win over Blackpool, and looked decent in the win over Cheltenham.

Even if Sawyer is fit enough, Adams could be tempted to keep the faith in the 20-year-old and start him on Saturday.

CDM - Yann Songo’o

songoo

Despite playing his whole career to date as a centre-back, Derek Adams decided that Songo’o is better suited to playing in centre midfield.

He looked out of his depth on debut against Luton whilst playing in defence, but was moved into defensive midfield for the Mansfield game. He’s played there since, and his physicality makes him a formidable opponent.

He’s still learning the role, but already his positioning is decent, and he seems to win the ball back a lot, exactly as he should.

Last season, Adams did the same with Carl McHugh, who had played as a centre-back for all of his career, before suddenly being moved in the middle of the park by the ex-Ross County manager.

It turned out to be an inspired decision, and McHugh ended up being one of the team’s best players last season.

If the same can be said about the ex-Blackburn Rovers player in twelve months time, then he’d be pretty pleased with that.

CDM - Connor Smith

Connor Smith

This is a tough call between Smith and David Fox for me.

The latter had a poor start to the season before a very good cameo last weekend but, whilst Smith was ordinary at best against Cheltenham, he adds, in my opinion, a better balance to the side.

A self-labelled box-to-box midfielder, Smith’s work rate has to be exceptional.

The 23-year-old missed the opening day defeat to Luton, but came on for the second half of the defeat to Carlisle United before starting the next four games. He’s played twice as a defensive midfielder and once in both central and attacking midfield.

The ex-Wimbledon man already has an assist to his name this season and, given the time, has the ability to cement his position in this team and take them to a higher level.

RM - Craig Tanner

tannerrr

Last weekend, I was surprised that Tanner was an unused substitute, especially considering during the first half Argyle didn’t use the width of the pitch anywhere near enough.

I expect him to get the nod over Jake Jervis in this one, who didn’t produce enough opportunities and ended up putting the best chance of the first half wide.

Tanner’s versatility means he can perform in a number of positions, including on the wing, and I expect him to use his pace to be able to break down the Cambridge back four.

The on-loan Reading youngster has had just nine minutes of cameo at Argyle this season after becoming a fans favourite at the club last term.

CAM - David Goodwillie

David Goodwillie

The former Blackburn man came on for Jimmy Spencer in the infancy of last weekend’s victory over Cheltenham, but looked unable to hold the ball up from goal kicks, and was dominated physically by the two Robins centre-backs.

However, after new-signing Arnold Garita came on, Goodwillie looked a lot better.

Garita’s physical presence meant that the 27-year-old could feed off knock downs and use his pace to get at the defenders, something he couldn’t do before the on-loan man came on.

Therefore, to get the best out of arguably one of the club’s best players, Adams needs to play Goodwillie as a number ten, just off a player who can hold the ball up and allow him to run on to it.

LM - Graham Carey

Graham Carey

As Goodwillie gets the number ten slot in this XI, that leaves a dilemma as to where to play Carey.

He’s too good to leave on the bench and, after doing well on the left-hand side of midfield in the second half of the Cheltenham game, I think that should be where Adams picks him.

He can use his skill to get past a player, and he isn’t slow either.

His crossing ability demonstrated at corners and wide free-kicks leaves me with no worries that he wouldn’t be able to put the ball in, and when cutting in he would cause serious dilemmas between full-back and centre-back.

The 27-year-old has played there twice already this season, against Blackpool and Mansfield, where he bagged a brace and claimed an assist.

Interestingly, he hasn’t scored when being played in the number ten role, so perhaps it suits both Carey and Goodwillie to play them in these new positions.

ST - Jordan Slew

slew4x3195-352301_478x359

Whilst new signing Garita was a player in my thoughts to start up front on Saturday, I’m going to go for Jordan Slew after his impressive performance in the 4-1 victory over Newport in the EFL Trophy.

He claimed a goal and an assist in that match when playing in tandem with Goodwillie, who also bagged a goal in the win.

His hold-up play and aerial threat is something that this side needs, so he just edges out Garita for me.
