The 2016/17 Championship season had not started in the most positive way possible for new Leeds United manager Garry Monk, but with two wins on the bounce in their last two league matches it appears that things are starting to look a bit more encouraging for the former Swansea gaffer.

Saturday lunch time saw the Whites pull off a comprehensive 2-0 win over their bitter divisional rivals Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium, with a performance that showed glimpses of the potential of this squad that Monk has put together.

This Tuesday, United will face Championship rivals Blackburn for the second time in less than a week when they meet in the EFL Cup 3rd Round, and Monk's side will be hoping for a repeat of their 2-1 victory over Rovers when the two sides met last week in the league.

Football League World writer Steve Day picks his Leeds United starting XI that he thinks will dominate Blackburn in the EFL Cup, if Monk opts to use the 4-2-3-1 formation.

GK: Marco Silvestri

Monk has given no hints at what starting line-up he might choose for this cup game with the previous games in the competition, seeing the former Swans man opt for a mix of first choice and fringe players.

Robert Green's performances as keeper have been questioned this season, so Monk could use this game as a chance for Silvestri to stake his claim for the number one jersey.

DR: Luke Ayling

One of the key reasons for the victory against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon was the solid back four, and keeping the consistency of that defence could prove key in helping Leeds build a run of results and performances.

Youngster Lewie Coyle has started previous games this season but surely Monk will opt to stick with the experienced Ayling.

DL: Charlie Taylor

Taylor

The attacking full back is one of the most highly-rated young full backs in the Football League, and his introduction into the Leeds first team set-up has seen him flourish.

His threat on the attack as well as his awareness of his defensive duties, means Monk must surely continue to back the 23-year-old.

DC: Kyle Bartley

Bartley is a player that Monk knows all about and after releasing former centre back Sol Bamba, it shows that Monk has faith in Bartley to be the big man in the centre of the Leeds defence.

He was inspirational against Cardiff and his defensive partnership with Jansson could be the foundation of taking this Leeds side forward.

DC: Pontus Jansson

The 25-year-old centre back on loan from Torino has impressed in his performances for the club, so far and he has already made himself a fan favourite at Elland Road.

If Monk wants to get the best out of him then he will want to keep him happy with regular starts.

It is alleged he will be offered a permanent contract with the Whites after 20 appearances, so Monk will do well to make sure Jansson reaches that target as soon as possible.

DM: Liam Bridcutt

Club captain Bridcutt was seen as a coup of a signing by Monk when he signed for the club on 16th August this year, but an injury forced the influential central midfielder to miss the game against Cardiff.

Monk might be keen to give Bridcutt a start on Tuesday to test his match fitness, before re-introducing him into the starting line-up.

DM: Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillipsd

20-year-old Phillips is a product of the heralded Leeds youth set-up, and he has been given his chances by Monk already this season and showed what he can do when he scored a stunning strike against Nottingham Forest back on 27th August.

Monk will be determined to keep Phillips fresh and after a cameo appearance off the subs bench on Saturday he should be back for a start here.

AMR: Kemar Roofe

roofe

Signed from League Two side Oxford United during the summer, there was a lot of expectation on the highly-rated Roofe to deliver the goods this season.

He has been in and out of the Leeds side so far this season, but it is clear Monk is determined to give him his chance to impress and that could happen on Tuesday night.

AML: Alex Mowatt

Mowatt's performances have split opinion for a number of seasons, but it has become clear that there are certain positions and roles that the England Under 20 international can and cannot play.

An opportunity to do a job out on the left in this game could give Mowatt a chance to break back into the first team fold, after seeing his chances of regular action hit by Monk's apparent preference of players such as Hadi Sako, Ronaldo Vieira, and Stuart Dallas.

AM: Pablo Hernandez

Pablo HernandezPablo Hernandezssa

Hernandez is another Swansea-inspired signing by Monk.

The Spanish creative midfielder is the best player for the attacking central midfielder role, and Monk will want him to continue his form from the Cardiff game where he scored the decisive second goal in stunning fashion.

He really caused Blackburn problems in the position last week, so it makes sense for Monk to back him there again in this cup game.

ST: Marcus Antonsson

marcus-antonssondcvxz

Antonsson was a controversial signing by Monk from Swedish club Kalmar FF, where he bagged 22 goals in 41 matches.

He has already bagged his first goal for the club this season, and after Chris Wood showed what he can do on Saturday it will be the turn of Antonsson or his strike rival Souleymane Doukara to show what they are capable of on Tuesday night.

Antonsson seems the logical option.

What do you think Leeds fans? Is this a likely starting XI to be chosen by Monk on Tuesday night? Or are there other players you expect to get the nod instead? Which players would you like to see start the game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
