So after a disappointing season in the Premier League, Norwich have now dropped back into the second tier for another year of Championship football.

It will be a long, hard battle to try to return to the Premier League again with a number of other good clubs vying for those coveted promotion spots.

Norwich have decided to stick with Alex Neil and the core of players that have stuck with the club through promotions and relegations these past few years.

A common criticism of Norwich is that they have failed to add the players which help them develop as a club.

Therefore they are stuck in a permanent limbo whereby they are too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premiership.

As they look ahead to the opening fixture - away at Blackburn - I assess the starting team that Alex Neil should look to field, deployed in a 4-2-3-1 formation.....

GK: John Ruddy

John Ruddy just pips Declan Rudd to the starting goalkeeper spot.

The 29-year-old stopper has been a regular at Norwich since he signed in 2010 and has made 1 England appearance during this time.

Although Ruddy was dropped for a spell last year due to some questionable performances, he is expected to keep his place between the sticks.

RB: Russell Martin

The Norwich captain returns to right back in this team after predominantly operating at centre back last year.

The 30-year-old is a long serving Norwich player who still performs at high levels despite his age.

The Scotland international just beats Ivo Pinto to the right back spot for me.

CB: Stefano Denswil

Former Netherlands youth international Stefano Denswil has been linked with Norwich recently and it would be a real coup if they can pull this off.

The Club Brugge centre half would add European experience to the defensive ranks at Norwich, but they would have to lure him away from the prospect of Champions League football to secure his services.

CB: Timm Klose

Switzerland international Timm Klose signed for Norwich in January last year but couldn't prevent the Canaries dropping down a tier.

The 28-year-old had vast experience from his time in the Bundesliga and looked promising in a frail Norwich defence.

You can expect the towering centre half to thrive in the Championship.

LB: Robbie Brady

It was a very, very tight call between Brady and Martin Olsson but I've gone for Brady as I believe he offers more going forward.

Norwich are likely to be the more attacking side in more games, so the full backs will be expected to join attacks.

The 24-year-old Ireland international recently scored at Euro 2016 and can also play in midfield.

CM: Alexander Tettey

Tettey should retain his starting place for the season ahead.

The Ghana-born Norway international offers energy in the middle of the park and signed a one-year contract extension at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old is also well known for his occasional but memorable long-range goal.

CM: Jonny Howson

Jonny Howson has been a regular since joining from Leeds in 2012.

The effective box-to-box central midfielder is a very able Championship player and should star in this side next year.

The 28-year-old and Tettey are my choices ahead of Youssoff Mulumbu and Graham Dorrans.

RM: James Maddison

James Maddison

With Nathan Redmond's departure growing increasingly likely, maybe it is time to give the youngsters a go.

Rather than Matt Jarvis - who should be kept as an impact substitute - Norwich have the options of Josh Murphy, Jacob Murphy and James Maddison.

I have opted for Maddison here as he offers the most natural talent. The England under-20 international joined from Coventry in January but was loaned back to the Ricoh Arena, where he was highly rated.

After flashy, tricky, skillful displays in League One can the 19 year old attacking midfielder step up another league?

CAM: Wes Hoolahan

Irish playmaker Wes Hoolahan could be set for a starring role in next year's promotion push.

The "Irish Messi" has been at Norwich since 2008 and provides creativity in the attacking ranks for the Canaries.

He is currently away on Euro 2016 duty with Republic of Ireland but will be back ready for Norwich's first game.

The 34-year-old has the skill and ability to unlock defences in the Championship.

LM: Steven Naismith

Norwich will prize Steven Naismith as their star player if they can keep him at the club.

The Scotland international unfortunately only managed 11 appearances since his January move due to injury, but his ability to play up front or along the attacking midfield line is extremely beneficial for Norwich's promotion prospects.

The 29-year-old can score goals and set them up too and will be one of the Championship's best players next season if he doesn't jump ship.

ST: Dieumerci Mbokani

Mbokanid

Admittedly an optimistic inclusion but why not?

Dieumerci Mbokani is a free agent following his release from Dynamo Kiev and Norwich will be hoping that he's willing to rejoin them despite their relegation.

The 30-year-old striker scored 7 goals but was mainly used as an impact substitute and his presence caused defences plenty of issues.

He would score lots of goals in the Championship.
