New Cardiff head-coach Paul Trollope will be feeling the pressure ahead of this weekend's away trip to Craven Cottage, to play Fulham in their next Championship league game with the club falling behind the early division pace-setters.

The Bluebirds have struggled to hit the net so far this season having failed to score a single goal in their competitive matches.

Even their 2-1 win over Blackburn came with Rovers centre back Shane Duffy grabbing two own goals.

A criticism has been the conservative use of the 3-5-2 formation and there have been calls for Trollope to adopt a more attack-minded formation, such as the 4-2-3-1 which would take full advantage of City's attacking power in the final third.

Football League World writer Steve Day picks his starting eleven for Cardiff's away match with Fulham this Saturday using a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

GK: David Marshall

It goes without saying that Marshall has made the number one spot his own at Cardiff.

He has been with the club since 2009 having made 262 league appearances for the club, and has turned down a number of potential moves to Premier League clubs in favour of remaining settled in South Wales.

As the current captain he is the first name on the team sheet.

DR: Lee Peltier

This is a controversial option after the signing of the talented Welsh international full back Jazz Richards from the Cottagers, but there is a just reason for it.

One of the biggest criticisms Richards has faced during his career has been his inability to perform to his potential in a four man defence.

This was a reason for his abject performances for Fulham.

Peltier might not have set the world alight at Cardiff, but he has rarely let the side down and would offer a reliable option at right back.

DL: Declan John

The departure of fan favourite Fabio means that the left back role is now John's to make his own.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a positive season in the Premier League, with Cardiff under Malky Mackay's management, but his progress stalled under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Russell Slade.

Trollope appears keen to give John a chance and with a little backing and self-belief, there is no reason John couldn't have a great future with the Bluebirds.

DC: Matthew Connolly

connolly

The 2015/16 Player of the Season should continue at the heart of the Cardiff defence.

Now he is settled in one position rather than playing across the back-line, he is looking more assured and showing himself to be the player he always promised to be.

Having experienced promotion from the Championship with QPR, Reading, and Watford, as well as Cardiff, he has been there and done it.

His involvement will be key for stability this season.

DC: Sean Morrison

For a number of reasons, Morrison has never been the most popular player with City fans.

However, as time has gone on, Morrison has proven he has the brute physicality and relentless spirit to make it at the club.

Some might favour Bruno Ecuele Manga in this role but after a series of below-par performances, there are suggestions that Manga's thoughts might be elsewhere with a potential move away from South Wales on the horizon.

DM: Joe Ralls

It seems like the 22- year-old has been around for a lifetime, but the Cardiff youth graduate is still very much in his early professional years.

The former England Under-19 international has already made 87 league appearances for the club, and is now regarded as one of the most talented individuals within Trollope's squad.

He has played out wide but there is no doubt his engine and simple passing keeps play ticking over in the middle of the park, and this is where he flourishes.

DM: Aron Gunnarsson

The exit door seems to be getting closer for the Icelandic national team captain.

The 27- year-old had a brilliant 2016 European Championship but has not managed to replicate his form for his country for his club.

Maybe a run in the team in a more defensive role that mimics the role he plays for Iceland could turn things around, but it's probably too late.

Unfortunately, with Emyr Huws still settling in and Stuart O'Keefe ruled out through injury, he seems like a very capable option.

RW: Craig Noone

Craig NooneCraig Noone

If there is one word to describe Noone then it would have to be “enigma”.

The 28- year-old former Brighton winger caused Premier League defences all sorts of problems during Cardiff's solitary top flight campaign a couple of seasons back, but has failed to re-capture that form since dropping back down to the Championship.

There is no denying there is still an exciting and dangerous right winger in there somewhere with lots of pace, and given a run of games he could soon start delivering the goals and assists once again.

LW: Anthony Pilkington

pilk

Pilkington became a cult hero with the fans last season, as he was asked to play an unfamiliar role as the leading man in attack with Cardiff's attacking options limited due to injury and poor form.

He returns to his more favoured wing role this season and on that left side he will be able to provide crosses for the front man, but also cut in and get shots off from range if necessary.

It could be a big season for the Republic of Ireland international.

FC: Frederic Gounongbe

Frederic Gounongbeg

Nobody at Cardiff really knew what ex-Westerlo striker Gounongbe was about until he joined the club.

It was a signing that came out of nowhere but it was soon apparent that having scored 22 goals in the Belgian Pro League last season, he certainly knows where the net is.

That was until a number of glaring missed chances from yards out in the first few games of the season saw support for the Benin striker wane amongst the fans, and resulted in him being dropped for the Blackburn game.

Bluebirds fans should remain patient.

It takes time to adapt to a competition like the Championship and Cardiff have potent attacking threat on their hands.

It is only a matter of time before he settles and starts to adjust to the pace of life in the second tier of English football.
