Overall it has been a disappointing season for Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship, with their campaign drifting towards a mid-table finish after a run of poor results in 2018.

Under Thomas Christiansen, Leeds were flying earlier in the season, playing an attractive brand of football and at one time, topping the Championship table.

Even after a good start came to an end, Leeds were still firmly in the mix for promotion, until a difficult start to 2018 ultimately cost them.

Luke Ayling picked up a season-ending injury against Nottingham Forest, which has sparked a downward spiral in results, with Leeds never recovering from his setback.

Leeds have won just once in Ayling’s absence, which has left them 14th in the table heading into this weekend’s international break.

Here at FLW, we take a look at the squad Paul Heckingbottom inherited from Christiansen and select the best starting XI we believe he has available to him when everyone is fully fit…

Peacock-Farrell’s introduction to the starting XI has been impressive, with the 21-year-old goalkeeper now clearly ahead of his competition in the race for the No. 1 shirt.

Ayling has been sorely missed and remains Leeds’ best option at right-back.

Jansson has struggled for form on occasion this season, but there is no denying that the Swedish defender has quality.

Both Cooper and Matthew Pennington have had good and bad moments this season, but Leeds’ best form came with Cooper alongside Jansson.

Tom Pearce is coming through the club’s academy and Laurens De Bock has been signed, however, Berardi is still Leeds’ best option, which tells you all about their struggles at left-back.

Vieira has struggled to find his best form this season, with something missing from the midfielder’s game.

However, he is still a player with plenty of quality.

Since Christmas, Forshaw has been magnificent and has settled into life at Elland Road magnificently.

Alioski has blown hot and cold this season, but he has shown enough to suggest he is good enough in the Championship.

Saiz is Leeds’ key creator, and during the first-half of the season, he was almost unplayable.

Leeds have missed him when he has been absent.

For all the impact Saiz has had, Hernandez has been magnificent this season and looked a class above since the turn of the year.

This is a tough call, as Kemar Roofe has scored goals during his time in the side.

However, Lasogga gets the nod in the striking role.
