Jody Morris looks set to join Frank Lampard at Derby County, with an appointment looking imminent at Pride Park.

According to Sky Sports, Lampard is on the verge of taking his first steps into management, with the ex-England and Chelsea midfielder in discussions with Derby over their managerial vacancy.

Lampard looks set to be joined at Derby by Morris, 39, who is earning an excellent reputation as a coach with Chelsea’s under-18s coach.

The ex-Chelsea teammates will link up as manager and assistant of Derby, who finished sixth in the Sky Bet Championship table under Gary Rowett last season.

Fulham ended Derby’s promotion hopes in the semi-finals, with the eventual play-off winners beating the Rams 2-1 on aggregate.

Following Derby’s play-off semi-final defeat, Rowett was quick to turn his back on the Rams, joining Stoke City, on the three-year deal ahead of their Championship return.

It now appears that Derby have found the man they want to replace Rowett, with Lampard in pole position.

According to Sky, there are still a number of contractual issues to sort, but both parties are keen on completing a deal.

The Verdict

Morris’ reputation is continuing to grow as a coach, and him arriving at Derby, alongside Lampard, can only be seen as a positive.

The two clearly know each other from their time at Chelsea and Lampard will trust Morris alongside him in the dugout.

After Rowett’s exit, Derby’s supporters will be pleased to see their club moving quickly to make an appointment.
