Bristol Rovers have had a decent start to life back in League One under Joey Barton and they picked up an impressive win over Peterborough United yesterday.

In truth, it's no surprise that the Gas are competitive in the third tier, as they have a good squad and the boss sets high standards. We all know what Barton was like as a player and he has built a Rovers side that have that an edge, which is reflected by the disciplinary table.

Having picked up 37 yellows and two reds, Barton's side are eighth in terms of collecting yellow cards, although only three sides have picked up more red cards in the campaign so far.

That is actually a big improvement on the previous season, where Bristol Rovers incredibly had nine players sent off during their promotion winning season - which was comfortably the worst in the league.

When you add in 96 yellow cards, which was the third worst in the table, it's fair to say that discipline was a problem for the team and it's something that needed to be addressed, particularly as they were stepping up a level so a red card could be hugely problematic to the side.

Therefore, they deserve credit for making an improvement and it will surely have been something that has pleased Barton.

Of course, the boss needed to ensure the intensity and fight that made the team so good wouldn't be lost and the signs so far are that he has struck the right balance.

Overall, Bristol Rovers are doing well in the third tier and improving their discipline has helped ensure they aren't playing catch-up in games, as they had done previously.
