Derby County caretaker boss Wayne Rooney has been the topic of discussion with Neil Warnock ahead of this week's meeting with Middlesbrough.

Warnock is back in the dugout at the Riverside Stadium and is looking to work Middlesbrough into play-off contention.

This week they take on Derby, who are rooted to the foot of the Championship table and have Rooney overseeing things as player-manager after Phillip Cocu's exit.

The 35-year-old is thought to be amongst the contenders for the job permanently, which has promoted Warnock to discuss the former England and Man United striker.

“I think it’s good," Warnock said of Rooney's current employment, as quoted by the Hartlepool Mail. "Wayne hasn’t taken any qualifications so it must have just come to him in the last 18 months or so.
“I do think when you have so much experience it’s natural to see if you can use that experience to your advantage.
“It is a lot different managing a club or being a player-coach. when you have to make the decisions yourself it becomes far more difficult.
“As a caretaker I don’t think he’ll have that problem, I think they will just be enjoying it.” Derby lost out to Bristol City on Saturday afternoon, with Rooney suffering defeat in his first fixture in-charge. Currently, the Rams have won just once this season and have put only six points on the board. Their sole victory came at Norwich City back in October, when Rooney's free-kick was the difference at Carrow Road. The Verdict  It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Rooney and Derby now. He is clearly fancying himself for the job, but whether that aligns with what the club are thinking remains to be seen. There aren't many more experienced in the Championship than Warnock and it is always worth listening to what a serial promotion winner thinks about the potential appointment. The pair meet tonight and that'll be a good test for Rooney. Warnock will be eager to show him that experience often outweighs the youthful exuberance of someone like Rooney. Thoughts? Let us know!
