Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has been backed to make a move to Celtic by Kevin Thomson ahead of the winter transfer window.

Fletcher has been a rare positive at Hillsborough this season, with his form also helping the striker work his way back into contention for the Scottish national side.

Now, former Rangers midfielder Thomson, 34, has backed the 31-year-old to be on Celtic’s radar, admitting he would suit Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Speaking to BT Sport, and reported by the Birmingham Mail, Thomson said: “I wonder if Steven Fletcher could potentially be a name that could excite Brendan Rodgers.

"I think he's a top player, he would score goals. I think the way Celtic play as well, having young legs in midfield now.”

Fletcher’s career started in the Scottish leagues, with over 150 league appearances made for Hibernian.

So far this season for Wednesday, Fletcher has made 19 appearances, returning three goals and two assists for the Owls.

His impressive link-up play and running have put him back in contention for Scotland and he made a goalscoring return to the international stage back in November, scoring in a 4-0 victory over Albania.

Now, Fletcher will be hoping to play a part for Sheffield Wednesday over the course of the festive period, as Jos Luhukay looks to pull his side clear of the Championship’s relegation zone.

The Verdict

Whether Celtic hold any interest in Fletcher remains to be seen, but Thomson’s point is valid – the 31-year-old would fit into what Rodgers wants from his side.

He might not have been prolific so far this season, but it is worth remembering the state Wednesday find themselves in, with Luhukay’s side struggling in the Championship.

We saw on the international stage that Fletcher thrives with a better quality of player around him.
