Cardiff City's hierarchy have reportedly suggested that experienced defender Sol Bamba could take charge of first-team affairs on a caretaker basis if an appointment is not made by next week, according to WalesOnline.

It follows the departure of Neil Warnock on Monday afternoon, after it was mutually agreed that the 70-year-old would step down with immediate effect after more than three years in the role.

Since then, club chairman Mehmet Dalman has suggested that Cardiff would try and install a new manager within 72 hours.

However, if the new manager is not in place by next week, Bamba could be called upon to take first-team training, which would resume on Monday after the current international break

The club holds the defender in high regard, and it will bring a sense of continuity at a time of confusion.

There is no suggestion that the 34-year-old Ivory Coast international will be considered for the full-time role at present, as he has not yet completed his UEFA A Licence coaching badges.

The Verdict

This could be a sensible decision from the board of directors at the Cardiff City Stadium, as it gives them more time to finalise details of any potential appointment without having to rush.

Although his coaching acumen is questioned, Bamba is a current-team leader in the dressing room and the 34-year-old will be used to Neil Warnock's previous methods on the training field if he steps up, limiting the disruption to the team.
