34 passes: The Reading man who played a starring role in their last-gasp win over Ipswich Town

Reading picked up a crucial three points at Portman Road on Saturday as they beat relegation-rivals Ipswich Town 2-1.

The Royals took the lead through Nelson Oliveira in the first-half, but were pegged back by Gwion Edwards who fired home in clinical fashion late on.

But Mo Barrow snatched a last-gasp winner at the death to give Jose Gomes’ what could be a vital three points as they battle to retain their Championship status.

One man who certainly played his part in the win was Emiliano Martinez, with the Arsenal loanee keeping the Royals in the game with a number of impressive stops to keep Ipswich at bay.

Martinez is the subject of our FLW Spotlight this week, so we look into his performance in more detail.

Martinez was one of the star men in the win, and kept Reading in the contest throughout the match and is proving to be one of the signings of the season.

He made six saves in total, including one similar to David Seaman’s famous save against Southampton and he’ll surely be keen to follow in the footsteps of the Arsenal and England legend.

With Reading’s possession based style of football under Jose Gomes, Martinez had 45 touches and made 34 passes in total during the match.

But with 15 accurate long balls against Ipswich, he is proving to be the goalkeeper that Reading have been crying out for in recent weeks.

His distribution is one of the best in the Championship, and Gomes will surely be wanting to make his loan deal a permanent one in the summer when the transfer window reopens.

Martinez impressive displays will be the difference in keeping Reading in the Championship this season, and he’s been an excellent addition to the Royals squad since he joined the club in January.
