Blackpool legend Charlie Adam believes that the club can challenge for promotion this season after the recent takeover was completed.

Simon Sadler is the new owner at Bloomfield Road, having bought a 96.2 per cent share of the club. The lifelong Tangerines fan has been watching them since 1977 and is seemingly the perfect owner after years of decline under the hated Oyston regime.

Adam, who scored 34 times in 98 matches for Blackpool and helped them to their first ever Premier League promotion, believes that they're now set to usher in a new successful stage of the club's history.

“It’s great news and I can imagine there will be a buzz around the place,” the midfielder told BBC Radio Lancashire via the Blackpool Gazette.

“I think the season ticket sales will soar again now because they know that someone else is in control of the club. Hopefully, the club can get itself into a position now where it can be challenging for promotion.

“It’s a new era. It’s something new after 30 years of having the Oystons in charge. It’s something everyone was looking forward to because a change was needed and now we look forward to the new ownership."

Adam is currently out of contract, having left Stoke City in the summer. He spent three seasons with the Seasiders, joining from Glasgow Rangers in 2008 before earning a move to Liverpool.

The Verdict

Adam is right; this is a fresh start for the club. Sadler appears to be the perfect owner, he's a lifelong supporter but a successful businessman as well.

Owen Oyston did claim to be a supporter, so perhaps the celebrations shouldn't begin just yet. you have to wonder if Adam is rolling out these kind words with an agenda; it would be a good move at the tail end of his career and his use of the word 'we' in his comments was interesting.
