Everton are expected to make the first move in the race to sign James Maddison as they look to replace Wayne Rooney, who is expected to leave Goodison Park this summer.

According to the Guardian, Norwich City’s Maddison has been identified as Rooney’s replacement at Everton, with the ex-England captain expected to move on after just a year back with his boyhood club.

Rooney, 32, looks destined for a move to DC United, which will trigger Everton to make their move for Maddison, who could cost over £20m to sign this summer.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fine year of football in the Sky Bet Championship, impressing in midfield, despite Norwich only managing to struggle to a mid-table finish in Daniel Farke’s first year at Carrow Road.

Maddison was a shining light, scoring 16 goals across all competitions, with 15 of those coming in the Championship.

The England youth international also bagged a further eight assists in a hugely impressive campaign.

Everton are not the only club interested in Maddison, however, with Leicester City and Fulham set to be involved in a bidding war. Tottenham and Liverpool have also shown an interest in the 21-year-old, who is keen on a move to the Premier League.

The Verdict

In terms of the role that Maddison plays, he would be the ideal replacement for Rooney, particularly in the long-term.

What we’ve seen from the midfielder in the last 12 months has been impressive, with Maddison having more than enough quality to take the step up into the Premier League.

Should Everton make their move, it is unlikely it will be a straightforward deal. Norwich will be looking for a huge transfer fee, whilst others will also be alerted and are likely to make their move.
