Speaking to Newcastle Unitedâs official website, goalkeeper Rob Elliot has admitted even if the Magpies fail to win the Sky Bet Championship title, they have still achieved their goal for the season with promotion.
Rafa Benitezâs side secured a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking last week, when a 4-1 victory over Preston North End confirmed their place in the Championshipâs top-two.
There is one fixture of the Championship season remaining, and Benitezâs side are just one-point behind leaders Brighton and Hove Albion, who they are looking to overhaul on Sunday.
Elliot, 31, who has made just two appearances this season, insists even if the Magpies arenât crowned Champions, the campaign has been a success, he said: âWeâve got promotion back to the Premier League, which was the main aim and if there is a chance we can take so silverware as well, thatâd be fantastic.
âBut the first thing is, the job is done, getting back to the Premier League and we are looking forward and everyone is feeling positive.â
If Newcastle record a victory over Barnsley at St Jamesâ Park this weekend, and Brighton fail to pick up three-points against Aston Villa, Benitezâs side will be crowned Champions.
Looking ahead to the clash at St Jamesâ Park, Elliot continued: âHopefully itâll be a great day for everyone at the club, the fans, the players and you never know, we might even top it by winning the league.â
