Derby host Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday looking to respond to their fifth successive away defeat in the Championship against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The 1-0 defeat at Blackburn extended the Rams’ winless run to three matches, which has left Phillip Cocu’s side in 16th place in the Championship table seven points adrift of Sheffield Wednesday, who currently occupy the final play-off place heading into the midweek.

The Rams will be looking to get back to winning ways at home, having seen a five match winning run brought to an end with a 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers in their last game on home soil, which also saw Derby concede for the first time in four matches in front of their own supporters.

Given Sheffield Wednesday have picked up back to back wins against Charlton Athletic and Brentford to climb back into the play-off places, Garry Monk’s side will present a real test to the Rams’ solid home form over the last few months on Wednesday night.

The Owls have suffered just one defeat in their last five Championship matches and are beginning to find some consistent form under Monk, which could see them emerge as contenders for one of the play-off positions come the end of the campaign.

Can you name the last 13 Derby County players to wear the number 9 shirt?

Here then, we take a look at the XI that Cocu should field against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night…

Having opted to revert to three at the back during the Rams’ last two Championship games against QPR and Blackburn, the Dutchman is likely to stick with the same system for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night, as he looks to get some momentum going with the change in shape.

Ben Hamer has displaced Kelle Roos as Derby’s first choice keeper, following Roos’ poor individual performance in the Rams’ 3-0 defeat at Fulham a few weeks ago, and having pulled off some decent stops during the last two matches the keeper should retain his place against Sheffield Wednesday.

Cocu has selected a back three of Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom and Craig Forsyth in the last two matches, with Matt Clarke out of action, and they have shown signs of forming a decent partnership in alongside each other and the Dutchman is likely to stick with the same trio in midweek.

Jayden Bogle has started the last two matches at right-wing back and he has managed to get up and down the pitch fairly effectively for the Rams, but has at times lacked end product in the final third although he should still start against Sheffield Wednesday, while Scott Malone has faced a similar issue down the left but should also keep his place.

Derby have some decisions to make over who to start in midfield, with Krystian Bielik likely to keep his place in a holding role, but Cocu could elect to move Tom Lawrence back into midfield, in place of the ineffective Kieran Dowell, alongside Duane Holmes to help add some creative spark from the middle of the pitch.

Martin Waghorn started up front against Blackburn at the weekend, and he worked hard despite being given a lack of real service and that should see him keep his place, while Cocu could bring in Chris Martin alongside him to help the Rams hold the ball up and link the play better in the final third against Sheffield Wednesday.
