Whatever happens in the coming weeks in the Championship’s promotion race, Leeds United are on the verge of entering a big summer where we could see plenty of changes made.

Leeds, of course, will hope that they planning for life in the Premier League, and if that’s the case, we could see a number of players arriving at Elland Road, whilst Marcelo Bielsa might continue what he started last summer by clearing the remaining decks.

A host of players out on loan will be returning and will surely be at risk of the permanent axe. That spells bad news for 2017 addition Jay-Roy Grot, who was amongst those quickly turfed out when Bielsa arrived.

Grot was signed by Leeds on a four-year deal and at the tender age of 19, looked like he was built for instant success in the Championship. That never happened, though, with Grot netting one goal in 301 minutes of action. Bielsa quickly loaned him out to VVV-Venlo back in the Eredivisie.

Firstly, you’ve got to say that if Leeds felt Grot would have a long-term future at Elland Road then they’d have sent him to League One or Two, where he could’ve learnt more about the English game.

Obviously they wanted to get the forward back in his comfort zone and help him regain his confidence, but in terms of boosting his chance of making it at Leeds, it seemed an odd move.

Grot is only 21 now, and with two years left on his deal at Leeds, some will feel he’s got the potential to develop into a decent player for the club. But, ultimately, if Leeds win promotion back to the Premier League, he’s not going to be good enough to improve the first team and the Whites won’t be able to carry too many players.

Others at Elland Road from the academy have now progressed past Grot, with Bielsa having faith in a number of them as Leeds go for promotion back to the Premier League. Ryan Edmondson is someone fans would prefer to see given the chance to lead the line in the future, and Bielsa seems happy enough to offer players like him a route into senior football.

It is hard to imagine Grot will be the only casualty at Elland Road in the summer, with this season proving that you don’t need the massive squad Bielsa inherited to be a success. But it is certainly hard to see the young Dutchman have a future in Leeds.
