Leeds United were dealt an injury blow with the news that Pontus Jansson is set for a spell in the treatment room after picking up a knee injury in their defeat to Sheffield United.

Jansson played through the pain barrier on the day and ended up between the sticks after Kiko Casilla was sent off late on in the 1-0 defeat at Elland Road.

With Jansson out of action, it gives Gaetano Berardi a chance to stake a claim for a regular starting spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Berardi has had his fair share of injuries himself this season and has only just returned to the first-team picture after completing his recovery with the under-23’s side.

Berardi has made nine appearances in total in Leeds’ league campaign this season and will be keen to make a good impression to Bielsa at a crucial stage of this year’s campaign.

There are only eight games of the season left, and with Jansson rumoured to be out for three weeks, it will see Berardi be given the opportunity to start in two of those games.

He certainly is a fans favourite and Elland Road and has the ability to play his part in their promotion push this season.

There’s no doubting that he is a more than worthy replacement for Jansson, and with a point to prove, he could give Bielsa a welcome selection headache for Leeds’ remaining games of this season.

Bielsa will be hoping that Jansson’s spell on the sidelines will see the best out of Berardi as he looks to make up for lost time after his recent injury troubles.
