It has been an interesting season for Millwall as we approach the halfway stage in the campaign.

Hopes were high that, after a clear out and refresh in the changing room, Neil Harris could guide the Lions up the table and back towards the play-off positions but those ambitions did not last long.

With just weeks elapsed, Harris was on his way out, deciding that he had taken the team he loved as far as he could, allowing Gary Rowett to come in and take the reins.

With Harris now replacing Neil Warnock at Cardiff City, both parties are now able to move on and there has been a noticeable upturn in form for the Lions.

They currently sit in 15th place and have won two of their last three games, including a dramatic victory against local rivals Charlton Athletic before the international break.

Shaun Hutchinson opened the scoring early on at The Den but a Jonathan Leko equaliser in the 51st minute dragged the Addicks back into proceedings.

But the Lions dug deep and flaunted their impressive spirit shown in the past with the domineering figure of Matt Smith rising highest to thunder home a header in the 91st minute.

Can you name Millwall’s club player of the season from the last 15 years?

The 30-year-old had come off the bench just five minutes earlier, replacing Tom Bradshaw, after fellow summer signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had been chosen to start ahead of the former QPR man.

This weekend sees the Lions face a daunting trip to high-flying Swansea City, but how will Smith be feeling ahead of the clash?

You suspect that he will be confident of reclaiming his place in the starting XI and so he should be, having had a far greater baring on games so far than Bodvarsson.

This season has seen Smith rack-up four goals and two assists for Millwall in the Championship, whereas the Icelander has only popped up with one assist as of yet.

So the decision to not start Smith in his three opening games seems a strange one from Rowett but one he will surely put right this coming weekend.

He is clearly the more in form player and he will know it as well.
