Rotherham United dropped out of the Championship last season, something that would hardly be a surprise to their supporters.

After all, the Millers likely had one of the smallest budgets and despite a brave battle, they were always going to struggle against some heavy-hitters willing to gamble their future on extortionate wages.

Paul Warne and Rotherham have never been about that. They've operated under a tight budget recently, aware that the club have struggled in the past. They don't splash out big sums when in the Championship, but after dropping into League One they have taken some risks.

They've signed Freddie Ladapo for a fee of around £500,000, as well as adding in other key areas. They're widely expected to be amongst the teams at the top of the table, having established themselves as a yo-yo team, too good for this level but not quite up to Championship standard.

Is that the place they're filling right now? We pick three words we think perfectly sum up Rotherham's start to the League One season.

Disappointing

Overall, it's not been a good start to the season. The Millers are currently down in 15th place, although they do have two games in hand of the sides in the top six. However, with a seven-point gap already open, fans will be left a little disappointed.

Having already played Lincoln and Tranmere, both League Two sides last season, they'd hope to be higher up the division than they are. Those two fixtures only brought a single point, a real worry for Warne.

Confused

Tactically, it's not been clear what Warne is setting out to do this season. Ladapo has started wide in a front three at times, despite clearly being a centre forward.

They've looked to go direct at times which hasn't worked and they've struggled to cope with sides that sit deep at the New York Stadium, hoping to get a chance or two.

They'll need clearer tactics if they're to move forward.

Frustrating

Certainly at home; in two fixtures, they're currently without a win. Lincoln beat them 2-0, Tranmere held them to a 1-1 draw and home fans are already wondering where that elusive first home win will come from.

Both sides defended well against the Millers but in truth, the attacking threat they hoped to carry simply wasn't there.

They'll have to see a return from the likes of Ladapo soon if they're going to live up to their pre-season hype.
