Charlton Athletic are in the race with a number of Championship clubs to secure the signing of Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris in the final week of the transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The Addicks are aiming to bolster their attacking unit in order to boost their Championship survival bid during the remainder of the season, and it is being reported that Clarke-Harris has emerged as a primary target following his recent form for Rovers.

The 25-year-old has netted 22 goals in his 41 appearances since joining the Gas from Coventry last January and, while his goalscoring form has somewhat dried up in recent weeks, he has ultimately been a revelation at the Memorial Stadium.

Charlton have only managed to recruit one player in the transfer window so far with Andre Green joining on loan from Aston Villa, and head coach Lee Bowyer will be desperate for further bodies through the door before Friday's deadline.

Here, we take a look at three ways Clarke-Harris could fit in at The Valley...

A like-for-like replacement for Lyle Taylor

It is being reported by South London Press that Charlton are preparing for offers for star striker Lyle Taylor, with the likes of Bristol City and Brentford both thought to be keen on signing the 29-year-old who netted 25 goals last campaign.

These all came during Charlton's successful promotion bid from League One, and Clarke-Harris' potential arrival at The Valley could be viewed as a direct replacement for Taylor given he has also displayed a strong third-tier record over the last year.

The Addicks will not be able to solely rely on Macauley Bonne's goals during the remainder of the campaign, and Bowyer will be hoping Clarke-Harris can be the man to provide the guarantee of regular goals during their survival bid.

It would provide a guarantee of long-term striking depth

Charlton now have their sights set on planning for the future in addition to surviving in the Championship this season, and they would definitely benefit from signing a striker on a permanent deal given the uncertainty surrounding their other attackers.

The club's fresh ownership means the Addicks will now have the financial stability to invest in players with the long term in mind, and Clarke-Harris would fall under this bracket given he is only 25 and still has plenty of room to develop further.

Clarke-Harris' potential arrival could see him strike up an effective attacking partnership with Macauley Bonne, and with Taylor looking likely to leave while fellow striker Tomer Hemed is only at the club on loan, the pairing of Bonne and Clarke-Harris could be the way forward.

Bowyer's ability to develop lower-league players

Bowyer's ability to get the very most out of his players is one of the key reasons why he was successful in guiding his side to promotion last term, and the Addicks boss will also feel confident of working his magic on Clarke-Harris should he arrive.

The striker has already shown signs of his goalscoring quality for Rovers in League One, and Bowyer will feel he can provide the helping hand to ensure Clarke-Harris replicates his prolific record in the second tier with immediate effect.

Bowyer has successfully helped the likes of Bonne, Taylor and Tom Lockyer make the jump from League One to become key performers in the Championship, and Clarke-Harris may well be the next name to join this list if he arrives at The Valley.
