Wolverhampton Wanderers may not be entering the dominance over the division they have in the past few months, but with the season quickly drawing to a close, Nuno Santo’s men stand an excellent chance of securing their return to the Premier League.

Yes, the check book of the clubs Chinese owners has certainly helped, but Santo’s ability to create a harmony within a squad littered with high-earners must be admired, and the Portuguese boss is well in the run-in to be named the manager of the year.

Big signings were made, but those already at the club under previous management must be applauded, with Ivan Cavaleiro particularly impressing.

Here is what we have learnt about the player so far this season…

Cavaleiro could have fallen into obscurity this season, with Diogo Jota’s form and Helder Costa’s reputation having the capacity to keep him out of the side, but what has materialised has been quite the opposite.

Whereas Costa has been on the periphery following an excellent year last semester, Cavaleiro has defied his doubters and forced himself into Santo’s plans as an undisputed starter.

Approaching a combined twenty goals and assists tally for the campaign, Cavaleiro has been sensational and one of the club’s most consistent players, and he must be applauded for working hard to ensure his place in the side.

Whether Cavaleiro is used on the left or the right flank, Santo can be assured that his reliable winger will deliver the goods and contribute to a Wolves win.

Cavaleiro almost has an even split of contributions when deployed on either flank, and his ability to hit the byline and put a ball into the box when on the left is complemented by his tendency to cut in when on the right side and unleash a shot at goal.

The player has proven his worth to his side this year, and must be considered an integral part of Santo’s plans as and when they are promoted to the Premier League, as the winger will cause backlines serious problems at the higher level.

Cavaleiro consistently produces, but there are times when the player is out of this world.

On three occasions this year he has taken off over a spell of three games, with his first resulting in three assists and a goal, the second four goals, and the third four assists and a goal.

These are unsurprisingly productive spells for the club in terms of points, and it appears that when the 25-year-old is playing well, the entire squad raises its game to an equal standard.

Cavaleiro may not have received the plaudits of Diogo Jota this season, but his impact simply cannot be understated.
