It’ll be a struggle for Portsmouth to break the top six in League One this season, but fans of the south coast side will retain the belief that a second successive promotion can be secured this season following their fourth tier title last term.

Paul Cook may have left for promotion-chasing Wigan, but Kenny Jackett has performed well since taking up the managerial position at Fratton Park, and fans will be pleased with how the club has progressed under the former Wolves and Millwall boss.

The progression of certain players will also be looked upon favourably, with winger Jamal Lowe’s progress particularly standing out.

Here is what we have learnt about the player this year…

Lowe bagged four times in the league last year, and is already approaching the ten goal mark when his goals and assists for the season are combined.

Impressive considering the 23-year-old is playing at a higher level, fans will be pleased with the progress Lowe has made since making the step up to the next tier of the English game.

A solid run of form between now and the end of the season will prepare him to take the third tier by storm next term, should Pompey fail to sneak into the top six and secure an unlikely promotion to the Championship this year.

Lowe took Pompey by storm having broken into the first team following his arrival from non-league Hampton and Richmond, and many had expected the player to continue his rapid development in League One, with the step up to the third tier not as big as the leap from non-league to League Two football.

However Lowe’s stats are similar, if not slightly better than last year, and many have been forced to reign in their expectations of the developing star.

Lowe is still young and has a lot to learn having played his football on a part-time basis as recently as last year, but will continue to grow ahead of the new campaign.

Lowe has four in the league this season, with three of those coming in two fixtures against Fleetwood Town.

Lowe opened his account for the year with a double over then manager Uwe Rosler’s side in a comfortable 4-1 win at Fratton Park back in September, before notching his fourth of the campaign against the same opposition in February, nabbing the opener in a hard-fought 2-1 win over the relegation threatened side.

Lowe needs to begin to find the net on a regular basis if he is to be considered a star of the division, and having seen 75% of his goals come against a struggling side, has a lot to prove between now and the end of the season.

Pompey fans, thoughts on Lowe?
