Bradford City have been regular League One play-off contenders following their promotion to the division in 2013, yet the Bantams are yet to find the solution to their promotion woes.

Defeat at Wembley to Millwall last season appears to have had an adverse effect upon the squad, with the West Yorkshire outfit’s current play-offs hopes hanging in the balance following an abysmal run of form which saw them fall away from the top six places.

Forward Charlie Wyke has been the only shining light in what has been a difficult season by Bradford’s standards, with the former Carlisle United man bagging thirteen in the league to keep his side in contention.

Here is what we have learnt about the player so far this season…

Despite his tally of fourteen goals in all competitions, Wyke has found the back of the net more than once on just two occasions, an early season hat-trick against Bristol Rovers as well as a double in the 4-1 win at MK Dons.

Rather than all of his contributions coming in clusters, Wyke has proven he has the ability to consistently find the back of the net, elevating him as an extremely reliable option in manager Simon Grayson’s side.

The former Leeds and Preston boss is reliant on Wyke’s form, and will need the 25-year-old to be at his best as the Bantams battle the likes of Plymouth, Charlton and Peterborough for the final play-off spot.

Wyke has seen red cards given against him twice this season, and fans will be disappointed that the player’s discipline has abandoned him on multiple occasions.

A red in the 3-2 win over Oxford United didn’t prove costly, as Wyke had already scored the opener before his marching orders came in the dying stages, but his dismissal at play-off rivals Plymouth late last month will be looked upon with great remorse by the player.

Wyke is essential to the success of Grayson’s side, and having him unavailable for selection is a problem the experience boss would rather not have and will certainly feel is one that could be avoided.

Wyke must learn to control himself, as his absence is costing his side points.

Wyke has scored goals this season, but reservations will be held over whether he could succeed in the Championship should the Bantams be promoted this season.

Performing excellently after making the step up from League Two, Wyke has proven that he can adapt to the demands of a higher level of football, but the gap between League Two and League One is much smaller than the one that separates the third tier from the Championship.

It would make interesting viewing to analyse how the 25-year-old would fair in the second tier, and should Bradford fail to achieve promotion, it would be no surprise to see a bottom half Championship side take a punt on him, or perhaps one of the clubs that are promoted from League One.

However Wyke has a lot of work to do, and as he enters the peak years of his career in the game, his ability to shine will become more apparent if and when the opportunity is afforded to him.

Bradford fans, thoughts on Wyke's season?
