Reading recorded their first win of the season in a stunning 3-1 victory over Brentford at Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals took the lead in the 17th minute as Portuguese striker Orlando Sa scored his first goal for the club, heading home past David Button.

They doubled their lead 15 minutes later when Nick Blackman curled in a gorgeous free kick into the top right.

Things became a bit uneasy for Steve Clarke's men in the second half when Lasse Vibe, a player they bid for in January, scored a screamer from outside the box to make it 2-1.

However, they then wrapped it up when Danny Williams broke down the right and trickled in a cross for Blackman, who was tripped by Button and a penalty was given. The former Blackburn striker picked himself up to slot home and make it 3-1 in added time.

Here are three things we learnt:

1. Reading can be a real force this season

Steve Clarke described the first 45 minutes as 'the best he's seen as Reading manager' and it is no surprise.

The Royals ran the show against the Bees, not giving them an inch and could have been three or four ahead by half time.

Also, with the pending additions of winger Lucas Piazon, striker Robert Beric and possibly midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, Reading could be a dark horse for promotion if they can maintain good goalscoring form.

2. Brentford look toothless without Andre Gray

The Bees were far better in the second half but, despite holding the majority of possession, they only managed one shot on target from nine attempts to Reading's nine on target from 16.

Philipp Hofman made some decent runs but offered precious little and, despite his wonder strike, Vibe was pretty quiet throughout the game.

New signing Marco Djuricin will be a welcome addition.

3. The Ferdinand-McShane partnership is a brilliant defensive duo

Reading welcomed the addition of Paul McShane to replace skipper Alex Pearce this summer, and the Ireland international has not disappointed.

He was one of the stars of the show today and deserved a clean sheet.

Anton Ferdinand, who missed the entire season bar 45 minutes last year, is like a new signing and is a class above any centre-back I have seen so far this year.

With these two, Reading have a very solid base to kick on this year.
