Reading continue to defy expectations in this season's Championship and after their win against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, they're going strong in third in the table.

Thanks to a Roy Beerens double, The Royals bounced back from last weekend's surprise 5-0 defeat to Fulham in style, dispatching a Wednesday side that caused them plenty of difficulties throughout.

After going into the break at 0-0, Beerens scored twice before Steven Fletcher replied with a stoppage-time strike to give the Owls hope. But it wasn't to be for Carlos Carvalhal and his promotion-chasing side and they'll have to go again next week against Barnsley, who beat Norwich themselves on Saturday.

Reading had veteran goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi to thank for the three points, with the Omani goalkeeper making an excellent stop after Fletcher scored in the 92nd minute.

But after another tough Championship tie, what can we take from the game?

FLW's Hayden Atkins takes us through THREE  things we learnt from Reading's victory over Wednesday on Saturday...

Jaap Stam is focused entirely on the league

Say what you like but Jaap Stam's arrival in Berkshire has made Reading a really tough outfit to beat.

And in his post-match press conference, he made it very clear that his focus was well and truly on the league, not the upcoming cup tie with Manchester United, which of course, holds particular importance to the former Red Devils defender.

He brushed off any questions about the tie which shows just how serious he is about this promotion push. Could Reading still be there come the end of the campaign? Quite possibly.

Wednesday need to take their chances

High-flying Wednesday aren't doing too badly at all in the league but in the game against Reading, they didn't take their chances.

Joao had a fantastic opportunity to score for his side but fluffed his opportunity and at this level, at this point in the season, you need to take your chances.

Reading had fewer chances but still managed to put their goals away, which for Wednesday, could turn into a problem if it isn't rectified as soon as possible.

Roy Beerens could be a key man for the Royals

Whilst Roy Beerens has been good for Reading so far this season, he's been far from scintillating. But in the game this weekend, he was absolutely superb and more than deserved his two goals that gave his team the victory.

If he can start adding goals to his game, it could be a massive boost to his side's chances of getting promotion come the end of the campaign.
