There was another pre-season win for Leeds United last night, as the Whites came from behind to beat Guiseley at Nethermoor Park.

Leeds had trailed at half-time after a lacklustre first 45, but in the final half hour of the contest their class prevailed and Marcelo Bielsa’s side turned the screw.

Helder Costa levelled on his first outing for Leeds, before laying on the winner for young Polish playmaker, Mateusz Bogusz.

It wasn’t as convincing as the previous night’s 5-0 hammering of York City, but a side mixed with first-team players and under-23s will have benefitted from blowing off the cobwebs ahead of a trip to Australia.

Watching matters in Guiseley closely was FLW writer, Alfie Burns, who runs us through three things we learnt…

Ben White could be an outstanding addition

This was the first sight we got of young Brighton loanee, Ben White.

White lined up alongside Kalvin Phillips and Leif Davis in a back-three, with the youngster’s first performance for the Whites looking assured.

The 21-year-old carried the ball out well from defence, and his towering frame stood out, indicating that he will add plenty of physical presence to the Leeds defence this season.

Of course, sterner tests are on the horizon and White will have to do a lot more to convince he’s the man to replace Pontus Jansson, but this was a good first outing.

There are a number of young players ready for the step up

Amongst a handful of senior stars, Leeds had Jack Clarke, Jamie Shackleton, Jordan Stevens, Mateusz Bogusz and Leif Davis on show.

We know that Clarke and Shackleton are ready for the first-team, but the other trio look to be at the forefront of Bielsa’s plans and you’d expect to see plenty more of them over the course of the season given how Bielsa split his two squads at York and Guiseley.

Last year saw Bielsa rely heavily on the academy, and Stevens, Bogusz and Davis will all feel like a chance will come their way in the coming campaign.

Bogusz took his goal well, Stevens’ pace stood out and Davis looked comfortable on the left-side of the back-three.

Helder Costa adds something much-needed

As expected, the main focus was on Helder Costa on his first outing since joining from Wolves, and the Portuguese delivered a goal and assist.

Costa’s goal came after a brilliant turn and a powerful run, with his right-footed finish drawing Leeds level. He then laid on Bogusz’s winner with a cushioned cross after good play from Jamie Shackleton and Mateusz Klich.

There was also good work out of possession from the former Wolves man, suggesting he’s ideal for a Bielsa side.

But ultimately, it will be what he does in the final third that will decide whether he’s a success at Elland Road, and this was a strong first showing.
