Wigan Athletic put yet another point on the board as they look to secure their place in the Sky Bet Championship for next season.

The Latics shared the points with fellow strugglers Luton at the DW Stadium with many Wigan supporters feeling that it may have been an opportunity missed to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

Despite the best efforts of Kieffer Moore and Michael Jacobs, Hatters keeper Simon Sluga was in inspired form as he pulled off a wonder save to deny Jacobs a winner in the dying embers. Following the draw, Wigan now sit just two points ahead of Charlton, who occupy the final place in the bottom three.

Here are THREE things we learnt about their display on Saturday…

Not converting chances

It is no secret that Wigan Athletic have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net this season - they have found the net only 38 times so far this campaign. The performance against Luton on the weekend seemed to bring up all the same questions as Wigan struggled to get efforts on target.

Out of 12 shots that the Latics attempted, only two would find the target with Luton’s Croatian stopper foiling their attempts. Paul Cook’s side created plenty of good goal scoring opportunities to put the ball on target but on several occasions the ball ballooned both high and wide of the visitors' goal.

Cook will view this as a missed opportunity to cause more defensive woes onto Luton. The Hatters have conceded 71 goals already this term on their return to the Sky Bet Championship with Wigan only getting the ball once in the Luton net this season.

Defence is tightening up

Wigan’s back line put in an impressive performance on the weekend, only allowing the visitors one attempt on target within the 90 minutes. That takes the run of clean sheets to four in a row which will no doubt please Cook going into the business end of the campaign.

There were concerns over Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Leon Balogun after he was forced off due to injury at league leaders West Brom, but he was installed into the starting 11 which has made a huge impact for Wigan in recent weeks.

The ability to keep clean sheets against some of the divisions most potent attacking forces will give the Latics a great platform to go and win games between now and May.

Wigan can survive the drop

Wigan currently sit third in the Sky Bet Championship form table which gives the club a great chance of staying up this season, but they must not get complacent. Although they were not fully at the races against Luton on the weekend, it was vital for them to not lose the game. As mentioned previously, they restricted Luton to scraps in front of goal as they stopped the Hatters from making any ground on them.

The unbeaten streak will give the Latics so much confidence going into the final nine games of the season and with Wigan set to play the teams in and around them, that confidence will be vital. Huddersfield, Stoke, Barnsley, Hull and Charlton all find themselves in Wigan’s remaining fixture schedule and with the Latics' current form, you wouldn’t bet against them being in the Sky Bet Championship next season.
