Wigan Athletic secured a hard-fought point as they drew 1-1 with West Brom on Wednesday night.

It was a performance that caught many offguard with plenty of supporters not giving the Latics a chance.

The Baggies are in second place in the Championship and looking likely to secure a return to the Premier League, whereas Paul Cook's side are battling away at the other end of the table.

The draw ensured that Wigan remained within touching distance of safety - something which could be a huge boost in the weeks ahead.

But what did we learn from the 1-1 draw? Let's take a look.

A stroke of luck

If Wigan are to survive in the Championship they'll need a bit of good fortune.

Thankfully that's exactly what they got with their opening goal against West Brom as Sam Morsy's long-range strike was bundled into the net by Sam Johnstone.

That goal could be a turning point and the hope is that Wigan can build on it.

A moment of confusion

If the Latics are to secure survival then they need to stamp out needless errors.

Jamie Jones' lack of concentration proved costly as he picked up a back pass at the DW Stadium, leading to Charlie Austin getting an equaliser for the Baggies.

That mistake ultimately cost Wigan two points which could be costly.

A glimmer of hope

It may have only been a draw against West Brom but Wigan could certainly be boosted by that.

The Latics had the better of the play at the DW Stadium and doing that against the promotion favourites is no mean feat.

If Wigan can replicate that display in the coming weeks then few would bet against them getting the season back on track.
