Sheffield Wednesday earned their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory against QPR at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Friday evening.

The game lacked quality for the opening hour or so, with Morgan Fox's 43rd-minute opener putting Garry Monk's side ahead.

However, it burst into life in the last 20 minutes as QPR threw on both Nahki Wells and Bright Osayi-Samuel to push for an equaliser.

In the 91st minute, Wednesday extended their lead through Sam Winnall but that did little to halt the determination of their hosts.

The R's grabbed a goal of their own two minutes later, with Wells rounding Cameron Dawson and slotting the ball into the back of the net, and pushed hard for a second but were unable to find one before the final whistle.

After last weekend's 5-0 hammering at the hands of Blackburn Rovers, Monk's men claimed a well-needed result and are in the hat for the fifth round draw.

The Owls face a trip to Wigan Athletic tomorrow but before the focus shifts to that game, here are three things we learnt from their FA Cup victory...

Their options beyond Steven Fletcher remain questionable.

Wednesday looked in the ascendancy for the majority of the first hour but despite having two strikers on the pitch, failed to create many real opportunities.

With Fletcher facing an extended spell on the sidelines, this was a chance for Jordan Rhodes and Winnall to prove they can step up but neither were particularly impressive.

Winnall grabbed his second goal of the season with a smart finish late on but other than that struggled to make much of an impact, while Rhodes was anonymous for the majority of the evening.

The cover for Fletcher has been questionable all season but Friday's game indicated that their promotion hopes could hinge on bringing a striker in before the end of the month.

The backing from their dedicated support could be a real boost during their run-in.

More than 3,000 Wednesday fans made the trip down from Yorkshire to West London on Friday evening and were the dominant force inside the KPF.

That's a hugely impressive number considering the Owls were hammered 5-0 by Blackburn just last weekend.

Clearly the fans of the Yorkshire club are a dedicated bunch and they helped their side at the KPF on Friday evening, hinting they could provide a real boost in what looks to be a tight run-in.

Alex Hunt looks like an exciting prospect.

The 19-year-old replaced Sam Hutchinson just after half-time to make just his second appearance for the Wednesday first team.

Hunt had a tidy game in central midfield but what was most impressive was his confidence and attitude. Often young players wilt when given their chance to step up but the central midfielder constantly looked like he wanted the ball and a chance to impact the game.

If he can continue to develop, he looks like he could be an exciting prospect for the Owls.
