Sheffield Wednesday crashed out of the FA Cup after they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Premier League giants Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

Pep Guardiola's side dominated the game when it came to the statistics, but they had to wait until early into the second-half to break the deadlock when Sergio Aguero fired home the only goal of the game.

Sheffield Wednesday came into the game with one win in their last eight league games, which had plenty of the club's supporters fearing the worst against a Manchester City side that were coming into the game off the back of an EFL Cup triumph after beating Aston Villa in the final.

Owls boss Garry Monk opted for a defensive-five on the night, and they limited the threat from the visitors on the night, as they looked to find an all-important second goal at Hillsborough.

But Sheffield Wednesday couldn't find an equaliser on the night, which now means they can turn their attentions to their faltering league campaign this weekend.

We look at THREE things we learnt about Sheffield Wednesday after this narrow defeat at the hands of the current FA Cup holders.

It was a performance to be proud of for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters would have been forgiven for fearing the worst heading into this one, as Manchester City are a side that can be ruthless in front of goal when they're in the mood.

The Owls came into the game with only one win in their last eight league games, and although they were beaten on the night, there was plenty of fight and passion on show from Garry Monk's men, which will be pleasing to see for the club's supporters.

If they can replicate this type of performance when they return to their league campaign, then you have to feel as though they'll find a run of positive results in the near future.

Joe Wildsmith has given Monk a selection headache.

There was certainly an element of surprise when Garry Monk handed Joe Wildsmith a rare start in between the posts for Sheffield Wednesday.

The goalkeeper hadn't featured for the Owls' first-team since August 2018, and replaced Cameron Dawson in the starting XI for the game against Manchester City.

But he certainly staked a claim for a regular starting spot in the Sheffield Wednesday team, with a number of impressive saves to keep Pep Guardiola's side at bay on the night.

Monk has definitely got a selection dilemma on his hands for the remainder of this year's campaign.

Barry Bannan stood out for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scotsman put in an impressive display in midfield, and tried to get Sheffield Wednesday on the ball when they could against a side that like to dominate proceedings in a game.

It appears as though Pep Guardiola is a fan of Bannan as well, as he was quoted in a post-match press conference labelling the midfielder as 'an incredible player'.

"Bannan is an incredible player with quality who made the passes for the fast players up front."

He'll be hoping that he can continue to build on this strong performance when they return to action against Brentford this weekend at Griffin Park.
