Reading FC crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, after a defeat to Wolves at Molineux.

Jose Gomes made a number of changes to his squad for this one, and that saw them struggle to gain a foothold of the game in the early stages of the contest.

The Royals fell behind in the first-half though as Joao Virginia failed to keep out Bruno Jordao's tame effort from distance.

But the introduction of John Swift and Ovie Ejaria made a difference for Gomes' men though, with Swift's cross finding Lucas Boye who headed home in the ninth minute of injury-time.

But Swift and Boye both missed their penalties in the shoot-out, and Reading will now turn their attentions to their league campaign, where they'll be keen to turnaround their poor run of form.

We look at THREE things we've learnt about the Royals after this defeat on penalties.

Gomes' substitutions were spot-on

It didn't come as a surprise to see Gomes resting some of his key players for this one, as Reading's priority will be to focus on their league campaign.

But with the Royals behind, Gomes brought on John Swift, Ovie Ejaria and George Puscas in the second-half, and they certainly made a positive impact.

Swift's performance in particular caught the eye, and he'll be hoping that he can build on this impressive showing heading into their game against Swansea on Saturday.

Lucas Boye has played himself into contention

Reading have a number of options in attack this season, with George Puscas and Lucas Joao likely to be one of the first names in the squad each week.

But Lucas Boye certainly will have caught Gomes' eye in this game, and was Reading's main attacking threat going forward throughout the game.

His efforts were rewarded as well, as he headed home from close-range to spark jubilant scenes from the travelling supporters.

Boye will be quietly confident that this performance could earn him a start for when they're next in action against Swansea City this weekend.

Joao Virginia's future at the club looks bleak

There were some eyebrows raised when Joao Virginia was named in the starting XI, especially after some costly errors earlier this season.

It's safe to say that the Everton loanee didn't cover himself in glory during the game against Wolves either, and it was yet another error to his name as he spilled Bruno Jordao's effort to give the Premier League side the lead on the night.

With Rafael hardly putting a foot wrong since arriving in the summer, it seems as though Virginia's future at the club could be all but over.
